This is the only opportunity I will get for a long time to spend a relatively large sum of money on a bike that must last me for at least 5yrs.
My question is would you look round for an 1150 twin spark or just go for a single spark assuming that you could not afford a 1200.

I don't think it's something which would be a deal breaker if the bike was right.

As far as I can remember, there wasn't a single case of 'surging' reported on a twinspark bike - even though BMW denied that curing this problem was behind the introduction of the modification.

Given the option, I'd go for a twinsparker, but don't forget that plenty of people have not experienced surging on their single spark bikes either.

Surging can be cured by fitting a Techlusion fuel controller (£200ish) anyway...

Yeah Mike

The surging thing is what really concerns me most of all and I would rather spend a little more and go for the Twin spark to avoid it.

Well, if it's a major concern - go shopping for a twinsparker...

I second that. My old single spark was a bitch for surging. Since then, I've had two twin-spark boxers, and neither of them surged one little bit.

The twin-spark motors also run a little bit smoother (due to the improved combustion).

A very mixed opinion, I suppose I should just go out and buy a twinspark. JFDi as we say (just feckin do it) :D

My first demo ride was on a single spark GS. Nothing super serious, but it surged. I wasn't really in the market at the time, so I didn't care. When the two spark came out, I didn't even have to demo the bike. I just bought it. Both of my two sparks do not surge.

Buy the two spark.

I bought my '02 1150GS (single plug) at a year old (and with only 715 miles on clock!) and it surged like mad. By 6000 miles it was improving but I then had the barrels and head replaced under warranty due to corrosion.

After that, it never surged again and is now up to 14,000 miles. As far as I know, they didn't fit extra plugs :D .

I think those bikes that do surge all improve with miles. My engine is a peach!

I'm on my second single sparker - neither have surged. Maybe i'm just lucky.

If it were me, I'd be much more worried about condition, price, the previous owners, service history etc, possibly even colour and accessories than number of plugs. My experience has been that finding a bike that feels *right* is much harder that you'd hope - and limiting yourself makes it even harder. If you pick up a single-sparker that does surge, there's loads advice on this site relating to fueling mods to help you fix it.

Good luck either way - you won't regret it!
