I ordered a GS1200 in August from Rainbow. I followed the threads recently on the bikes percieved lack of development and reliablity. Am in total agreement with these comments. I have had 8 valved boxers since 95 and have done 150000 miles, first mod on RS11 where cylinder head gaskets 12000 miles, then a bearing and gearbox at 60000 miles both known problems. Gearboxes where modded continually up to 99, work then started on the new model gearbox. Poor reliability is not only reserved for new model bikes in 01 we set off for Estonia first day in Germany an RT11 stopped with a broken final drive which was changed under warranty. 5 days later the new final drive failed in CZ, bike taken to Germany, no new final drive available, factory on holiday this being September. (Model year changes after September holidays i.e. GS1150's made up to September hols, GS12's made after september hols.) 03 a friend on a new GS1150 went to Spain and final drive failed.
Have been round factory at Spandau it's no great shakes. Its just a concrete shed, standard Engineering Factory, with standard type machines, certainly nothing awe inspiring.
One amusing area is Test Area. New bikes rode onto rolling road, connected up to diagnostics reved up to rev limiter in every gear, brakes slapped on. Engine stopped, diagnostics reset, engine restarted same process. If everything checks out, oil drained out and re cycled for next bike, all this on an engine running for the first time i.e. stone cold and brand new.
I am up for changing my RS1150 for a GS12 providing it suits me and my wife. I am hoping for a lighter and lower bike with cast wheels. People are talking 30kg lighter, remember 1100s coming out, BM said a lot lighter. What BM did was take off ABS system 12KG, fit a smaller lighter battery and a smaller lighter alternator. Most people went for ABS which needed a bigger battery and alternator and weight went up. I wonder when they weigh these bikes if it will be like for like. The seat I am expecting to be crap as with all BM's. Last 4 bikes have had Corbin seats. we do long days, riding in comfort is a big priority with us, this time it will be a pair of Air Hawks.
As far as off road riding goes you can off road/green lane with anything within limitations.
We've done long stretches of unmade roads in former Eastern Block Countries on 1100RS, but deep sand and mud on road tyres for me is a definate no no for me, but lets face it snow is a bit of a challenge as well, but if its there its there. I am going for cast wheels, I hate cleaning spokes but means more weight but lower seat height I hope. I will also go for none ABS. Not for weight saving but for the hassle they give when they have got miles on them.
I believe there is a new type of wiring harness (for a motorcycle) which is multiplexing ( I can just imagine indicating right and getting flashing headlight, brake light and horn beeping in sympathy). but it will save weight.
As for 04 we camp a lot, so it looks like Wales, Scarborough, Andover, Princetown and a Hotel in the Picos with the GS Club, camping with Motor Guzzi Club in Scotland, camping with the BMW Club and Chalet at Four Stroke in CZ.

Kind regards to everyone for the information on the posts

Hi Dennis.....

CZ again next year?, is it at the same venue...Hranice...

1200gs, I am looking forward to the launch of this new model keenly...
As you know I upgraded to the new Varadero this year from the old model and am certainly impressed with the improvements, hope this applies also to the new gs,

As for reliability of BMs, is it not correct that probably no other bike comes close to the mileage raked up by these bikes hence more instances of mechanical failure?..........when was the last time you came across a suzuki with say 80,000 on the clock?

Will we see you at craven arms this weekend?,me and bernard are in the caravan, we have room for more if you wish to share.....

And why is it that you are getting an 1200GS?
I have been buying BM's since 72. I have never had an off road bike. Due to the boys in blue and speed cameras, we are now riding on more and more b roads and unclassified roads. We have tried 1100, 1150, GSA and found them to big and heavy. That is why we are hoping the GS range has evolved into a lighter bike.
Today, we went up to the Lake District to go over Hardnot Pass, but unfortunately the frozen snow on the road defeated us. So we tried Wrynos Pass and unfortunately the black ice defeated us. Fell on my arse checking the road. This was on our 1150RS. Other roads were passable, but very dirty.

could be? or is it the touratech'd one?

Quote in "RIDE" magazine saying they'll have a report on the new 1200GS in their mag out on 25th Feb, so what with lead times etc the launch must be in January as stated before............

Dennis,
I read your post with interest, and came to only one conclusion.
Reading your post you havn't even said one good thing about them.
Why buy another, especially one you havn't seen yet?????

got to agree buy a different bike. The 1200 is going to be similar to the 1150, it might be a tad lighter a tad quicker etc but thats all.....

lets make an estimate on how much we have to fork out for this 1200,,,

i rekon it has to be a tad under the 1150adv so since it comes with abs and the adv-abs hits 14,150 euros then i think we are probably talking 13,900 for a new bike no frills... thsi is unless they revise the adv price upwards...

if you consider also that , at least here in italy, retailers have been cut their margins to below 10 pct then i think we are looking at very stiff negotiations especially for all those that are trading in their 1150 s....

Can't remember saying crap BMW's can remember saying crap seats. Does anyone disagree?
Why buy another BMW. Every bike I have ever owned has been better than the last one. BMW are very good at taking one base model and evolving it over three or four models, therefore the next one I assume will be better than the current one.
Bikes that I think will suit me and my wife for the riding style we have, I go out and have a test ride on, not just 15 miles round the block, but will wait until there is some atrocious weather about. So that we know what the projected bike will be like in the wet and the dry. The R1150RS for our needs we think is probably the best bike not only BMW make but anyone makes. Bearing in mind the only bike that stands out as being totally different in 03 was a Test ride on a KTM 950 Adventurer. The long travelled, well damped suspension and the light weight, made it a revelation in the handling department ( for my limited motorcycling ability) and the mid-range power for me was astonishing especially two up off road.
I think the big plus for BMW's is the very easy going soft nature of the power plant and bike making them very easy for anyone to ride. A BMW is never going to do anything dramatic, you press the button and it starts hopefully, you pull the brake and it stops Another big plus has got to be the easy and cheap maintenance costs, especially if you do it yourself. There is nothing very high tech or special tools needed to do even a complete strip down.
Hers hoping they increase the servicing from 6000 to 10000 at the very least.
