Hello- Can somebody give me some pointers/advice on running in my brand new GSA- I have to collect it from the delaers and have a good 150 mile journey home...I would like to know what to / what notto do to make sure I keep the engine on best form throughout it's life- Can anyone help?

I have heard some say thrash it regardless, and others spend the first 600 miles crawling along at 30 mph... all advice appreciated:)

Use a varied spread of revs but nothing excessive, Try to avoid lengthy periods on the motorway and tedious speeds.
The most important thing to do is load the motor up in short bursts, Don't let it labour but use it's low down grunt, this forces the rings onto the cylinder walls ensuring a good seal and preventing later oil consumption.

Make sure to vary the revs during the early miles and keep the throttle on small openings. A few more revs on a light throttle is better then labouring the engine at low revs. After the first 600 miles, increase the engine loading and revs gradually. A good thrashing in the early 000's is thought to reduce oil consumption later in the engine's life, a theory that I do subscribe to, but only after an initial gentle running in period (low load rather than low revs).

keep it nailed but you wont see any more than 120mph anyway :augie

IIRC the advice is to do lots of riding that means you go up and down hills, ie lots of gear changes and not blasting along a motoway at one revs.

Are you taking the p*ss?

Keep the engine spinning and do not allow it to bog down, (imagine you are on a 600 Jap four if in doubt) Try to avoid motorways for the first 150 miles or so, A/B roads are better as they mean more gear changes.

I ran my 1150 in exactly to the book, the 1200 I was nice to for the first 150 miles only and I find it uses a lot less oil than the old one, OK I know they are not the same engine but somehow the 1200 just seems to like a brisker run in period.

Typically I add <0.5 litres of oil every 4,000 kms on my 1200 :thumb

Looking forward to 'which tyre' or 'what oil' next then :thumb2

whatever Neddy :ymca Running in a bike is something you can only do once- best do it right first time around eh?

Again, thank you to all the folk who replied with good advice- really appreciated...:thumb2

don't let the engine labour , don't sit at one speed for long periods , don't go to the red line , don't be afraid to rev it occasionally , don't forget to check the oil and don't forget that its not just the engine that needs breaking in.

PS don't expect sensible replies all the time :D
