I know there has been a lot of posting about what to bolt on to stop the buffeting on the 1200GSA, but are there some helmets less affected than others?
I have a Caberg V2, great helmet on my other bikes but rattles so much I get blurred vision on the GS with the visor half shut, better fully closed but becomes very noisy. Fully open very quiet and no buffeting at all.
A buddy also has a 1200GSA with a BMW airflow open face helmet and never had any problems.
Does anybody have a full face helmet that isn't affected. You would have expected BMW test rider to have used BMW (Schuberth) helmets when developing the bike, so are these any better?

I never have a problem with my shoei multitec :thumb2

There's so much to take into account before you can just blame your helmet.

Screen settings, your height and seat height. Try adjusting those to see if there is any difference :)

Oh..... and welcome to the site :)

As previously said it will depend on all the other factors not just the helmet design. For what it's worth I have a Schuberth S1 and I'm 6'3". With the standard screen I experienced a lot of buffeting with the screen set on high. With the screen dropped to lowest setting, the airflow was smoothed out above my shoulders so the buffeting went, but left me with a lot of neck strain. I added a Laminar Lip which helped a great deal with the screen in the highest position but I think the additional stress with the lip put to much strain on the mounting holes and I ended up with screen cracks. So I changed to a Zteknic extra tall screen which I'm very pleased with.

I think you have two choices in this regard - either to get a screen which takes the wind right over your helmet (and is hot in the summer) or drop it as low as you can (and get all the crap thrown onto your visor). If you have inherent buffeting I doubt the helmet design plays much of a role in that.

Obviously theres a lot more to it, and i have tried the screen in various position, one notch from top works best but its still not particularly impressive unless I duck down an inch or two, which leads to bolting extensions onto the screen.

I wondered if there was a trend towards a particular helmet design as know one seems to have looked at the problem from that angle. If a number of people have a particular helmet that works it could be worth looking at. Especially as I am looking for a helmet anyway.

I am just amazed BMW has developed a bike as much as the GSA and not noticed the problem that seems to affect a great number of riders, the amount of detailing in the screen suggests they have done considerable work on the aerodynamics. Unless of course its a styling exercise and does bugger all!

I think screens are down to the individual and what they like and want, hence the massive choice of double bubble types for sports bikes, not just BMW. If everyone was the same size and build and sit on a bike in exactly the same way all bike makers would have the screens sorted, and millions spent on aftermarket screens could be saved.

Same as helmets, one mans perfect fit of one type may be like a bag of shite on another bloke.

I find the GSa very uncomfortable in a normal Full face lid, however with a peaked Enduro Style lid (Tour X, Hornet DS or BMW Enduro lid) I have no issues, I've put it down to the airflow hitting the peak and being deflected up and over, whereas in a full face it seems to pummel your head...
Just my observations like !;)

You may want to try a touratech screen extender which put's the airflow over your head. I think it's a brilliant thing and solved that issue for me:thumb

agree my cheapo laser openface with a peak is probably quieter than my shoeXR1100. good earplugs make the most difference and have to be the way forward. i managed to get tinnitus within 3 months of getting a Gs without them but everything has settled down now I wear them every ride. also helps you to forget about the slightly rough running at low speeds.

AGV helmets very noisy, Arai Quatum noisy, Schuberth C3 eerily quiet (I don't like ratchet chin straps though), Shoei XR1100 very quiet but not as quiet as the Schuberth.
And so screens; Wunderlich Spoiler vastly reduces noise and reduces buffeting considerably. TT GSA screen spoiler vastly reduces buffeting, and reduces noise considerably. Awaiting the TT GS spoiler as has little more height than the GSA one and hoping this will reduce more noise.

This is all based on me being 6'4" riding a 2010 DOHC GSA with the seat height on high front and back :thumb2
