GSA seat - is it 'that' bad two up?

Hi all, I've been lurking for a few weeks now while mulling over my decision to purchace either a GS or GSA.

One question: Is the seat on the GSA really unsuitable for two up touring.

And just to say, glad to be here on the forum :)

Bad might be the wrong word. Not as comfortable as the ordinary or 12 gs, not as good view as those two and if you fit the pizza boxes they tend to dig into the passengers thighs.

Could be considered good if you want the passnger to be up close to you and with no view on how fast you're going.

I think it all depends on your pillion... I've bought an Adv.

My missus hated the GS12 and didn't feel secure. I guess its something to do with up in the air stream etc.

The other prob with the adv, as you know is the size of the pillion accomodation which isn't great tbh. As the previous poster said, the bungie loops on the ali luggae will dig into your pillions thighs. A small pillion will be better off in this respect.

To fix it, you can remove the offending bungie point and fasten it back on inside out. I.e. the bungie point is on the inside of the pannier and the outside is just the screws. Dead easy took 5 mins.

My last bike didn't have a topbox but had a bigger pillion seat. She was happy trading space for a back rest, which means she can lean further back and give herself more room.

To finish off, I've also put a tribo seat cover on the pillion bit to stop her sliding into me during braking. works a treat.

I have to say though.......I would have bought the Adv anyway, whether or not she approved

lol, thanks both. Just the sort of replies I was hoping for ;)

Good to know about the reversal of the bungie hooks, cheers.

Did 800 miles a couple of months back with my wife on the back of my Adv. She normally hates going pillion prefering to ride her own bike and has always found pillions on most bikes uncomfortable after just a few miles.
For some reason though she found that going pillion on the Adv better than most bikes because of the way the seat slopes down at the back and so does not comperss the base of the spine.
Best thing is to do a test ride 2 up to see.

Best bike I've ever had for two upping......did a fair few long runs this year with Dani on the back, plus full vernatechs, tent and all the camping kit.

She was fine on the back....and apart from her legs being slightly cramped up (Dani's 5'10 ish) for long stints (which can ber solved easily with lowering kit for pillion pegs) enjoyed the ride.

I can also testify to how bloody good the ADV is in emergency situations with pillion and gear......as Andy lord will witness as he was riding behind us as I missed the indicators of a minivan infront of us and started going round the outside of him down a hill.....

One extremely large handlefull of brakes pulled us up perfectly, enabling me to slip behind him....I know that on any other bike I've ever ridden we'd have been off in a nasty fashion, if not worse.

When riding two up without the full kit on the back-rack, I did have to wrap my alaskan butt-pad once round the grab rail as it pressed on her coccyx....or I could have removed it easily enough. (didn't know coccyx's were removable did you  ;) )

Dani also fell asleep several times, and for long distances, nicely wedged in on the back.

PS neither of us are, erm, how shall I put this delicately.......slightly built ;)

Took a mate from to cadwell park on the back with camping stuff etc... we are both 6ft+ and it was fine, mind you he is used to an R1's tiny cramped conditions, so it must have been luxury.......

Must be really bad on the back

Mrs Ming is always kipping on the back of mine :D

Good decision - but remember when choosing which Adv to go for that the black ones go faster!!!!!

If your passenger has any bother with the seat, because its not got as much room to move as the standard gs. I fitted a touratech seat extension .The wife says that its as good as the old 1150 now. you have to remove the grab rail from carrier as it fits to this mounting but a topbox fits onto carrier no probs if you want one then no grabrail is needed

When I first bought the Adv my Mrs was very unhappy, I bought an Alaskan Butt pad and she's not complained since...well not about the seat on the Adv anyway;)

Thanks for the info Trev, any link to where you can buy this butt pad Monk? :)

If you want to give your pillion a bit of extra room, there's always this extension bit by Touratech:

I've got it and my wife likes the seat better with it. And there are several aftermarket saddles too. If you do a search here on the forum you'll find more info about those ("Search" button on top).

Go for it, it's a great bike!

Cheers,
Michel
