hi can anyone tell me about buying and fitting ohlins suspension front and rear to me other half "snowys " 1200adv.
thanks.

Sadly I can't pm you as your not a site sponsor, but you might like to pm me as I have a set of mint low mileage GSA12 ohlins which will be coming of the current bike before it goes to Dealer.

They are not too hard to fit, but the front one can be if the lower shock bolt is seized. Also the front Ohlins shock has a larger diameter spring, so its pretty tight getting it in, but once in place it fits nice. The rear is really easy, just have to remove the silencer. :thumb2

Check out the thread at the top of the 1200 GS section about fitting Wilbers suspension - lots of good info there.

in answer to your reply, could you tell me what was the reason you up graded to these shocks? and how much would you want for the pair,
regards
snowy.

Hi Snowy, I bought these as they are a significant upgrade on standard shocks (not that the standard aren't good, but Ohlins are better). As for price, I'm looking at £700 as they have only done 4300 miles and are in mint condition. They are the pucker full spec ones for the GSA12 and cost in the region of £1130 new.

They do slightly raise the bike, so this needs to be considered. I am 5 ft 10" and I think my inside leg is 31. I have the adventure seat set on the low position and I'm OK, but not completely flat footed. They are sprung for a 90 kg rider, so if your slightly heavier or lighter, that would be OK. But if your considerably heavier or lighter, you would probably have to get different springs.

Since replying to your original post, I have had 4 pm's concerning them.

I had Ohlins on my R100GSPD and one of my R1100GSs - the reason I bought them was because the rear shock damping adjuster broke (on the 1100) and the oil leaked out (on the 100) the Ohlins was less money than a new BMW. Also of interest was that they could be rebuilt in the future.

As for performance I noted that they had a greater range of adjustment which I liked as I often varied the load considerably.

I can not honestly say that they improved the on road performance when compared with the BMW shocks. (I had two 1100s and did over 50,000 miles between them and did over 100,000 between my R80GS and my PD so have good experience).

In my experience if you are trying to improve the performance of your bike you may be dissapointed (I am sure many will now reply now defending their descision to install loads of cash worth of Ohlins). I think they are a very high quality replacement should your origonal shock fail.

I know it is suggested that Ohlins have a better heat range performance - the suggestion being that the bMW loses a percentage of its damping when hot - that could be true.

If the BMW shock should fail on my 1200GSA in the future I will probably go with Ohlins again.
