Since I've just crashed with a set of these bars on my bike, I though members might be interested in the results. Unforunately, the bike has been written off so I cant post photos.
The accident was a SMIDSY with a car hitting my bike in the area of the right hand cylinder head. Combined impact speed (hers plus mine) would be about 80 mph at a guess. On this side of the bike, the bars were pulled apart at the join in front of the engine block, and then peeled back to lie almost flat against the rear of the bike. The rocker cover was ripped off and the cylinder block was cracked. But then I dont think bars are intended to withstand anything like this sort of impact so I dont see this performance as any sort of failure.
The bike slid down the tarmac on its left side. Here the bar did its job well, though there still was some surface scrape type damage (but no penetration) to the rocker box at the trailing edge. This could have been prevented with a surface type cover as well as the bars. So in practise the HB bar worked well at protecting the bike against a spill, particularly since the removal of the right side bar will have reduced the rigidity of the system overall.
If I buy another BMW I will install the HB bars again.
