Has anyone added more lights to a GSA with factory aux lights?

I have a 12GSA with the factory-fitted auxilliary lights and I want to add another set of lights (xenon) to this setup.

One of the xenons would be hooked up to dip beam, switchable through the second rocker on the aux light switch. The other xenon would be permanently on with main beam.

I'm thinking of mounting them above the existing aux lights, using the same BMW 'light bar'. Has anyone done this?

I dont have a 12GSA, but while I was researching whether a BTBR like set-up was available I came into this thread which suggested a HID based alternative.

Im pretty much converted to the idea now, and barring Alan coming up with a similar solution in the next six months, am likely to go with HIDs on the main, dipped and fogs.

Cheers,

Mike

I didn't make it clear on my original post.

I could use Touratech xenons, but they apparently mount in the same location as the BMW aux lights, so what I am looking for is anyone who has mounted xenons or spots in addition to the existing BMW auxilliary lights.

And if so, how did you mount them?

I have mounted a set of Hella FF50's directly above the standard OEM fog lamps. All I did was drill a hole through the GSA light bar inbetween the mounting lugs for the standard lamps. The metal of the bar is very soft and easy to drill, just needs some painting to prevent corrosion.

It is a tight fit doing this I used an 8mm, I think, stainless steel cap screw (allen bolt) with a ss locknut to bolt the supplied bracket to the top of the light bar. The locknut must be shallow enough and the bolt short enough so that it does not block the mounting hole for the bolt holding the original lights, if that makes sense!

The bike is not here atm so I can't add a photo but I got the idea from a previous post on the site.

Regards

Peter

Have you seen the beemer fogs converted to HID?

Trust me, when this is done you won't need any more lights. Plus, by adding more lights IMO, you'll end up making the bike look like E.T's mother ship!

I've done my beemer fogs (I went with yellow) as well and there is no reason to spend big money on the TT lights. Just convert the beemers for about $200 for the pair. I also converted my Hi/Low to HIDs.

I bought the BMW aux lights because I wanted the additional 'presence', and are just fine for that. They also fill in very nicely to the sides.

The xenons are for extended vision, and I would want to be able to adjust them for the particular circumstances, not to mention that more than 50% of my mileage has been outside the UK. Obviously, given the limited adjustability of the BMW dip/main beam, I can't achieve that by converting them to xenon.

I want to be able to have good verge illumination (whichever country I'm in) when I need it, which is why the xenon wired into the dip beam would go via a switch.

I can't achieve what I want by converting the dip/main beam or the aux lights, so what I need to do is to add additional xenons, so so what I am looking for is anyone who has mounted xenons or spots in addition to the existing BMW auxilliary lights.

Hi Tim,

Yes I have mounted PIAA 002 to my engine bars on my 1200GSA. I also have the factory fited spots. The 002 give a bright light out to the sides of the road lighting up the verge. My bike is a vines at the mo, but I will get it back tommorow I will take a pic and show you both night and day.

Hope this helps

Its still in the garage getting finished, but yes, have mounted additional Hella DE xenon premium spots on top of the BMW fogs.

I used the same mounting bracket, and had a arm jigged up to reach around the back of the BMW bar to end up with the lights on top of the bar on each side.

Sounds confusing after a few beers so will try and get you pics tomorrow Tim

Tim,

I Have mounted a set Piaa 1100's above the bm fogs, they fit very well using the Piaa tube mounts. Took my time to fit them and they look the dogs as well as providing an excellent beam of light at night, not cheap at around £250 (with wiring) but well worth the money.
Take a look at the link below (scroll down - they are calledf ATV mounting Brackets)

Thanks for all the replies, guys.

Colebatch: what sort of target price should I be looking for with the Hella Micro DE Xenons? Where did you source yours?

Tim

Tim I tried a number of things ... including HIDifying some PIAA 002Xs to mount there ... but they were too physically small. The Hella's are obviously a good match for the foglights underneath. I thought about modifying Hella halogens, but the Hella halogens don't have the driving beam pattern ... they are all fog lights, with sharp cutoffs and wide spread light. So in the end after much faffing about, I went back to the expensive solution - just get a pair of Hella xenon driving lights.

The fogs obviously work in conjunction with the low beams ... and I have replaced them with 35 watt HIDs

The normal dip and high beam are 50w HIDs

The Hella driving lights were 35 watt kits, but I have switched ballasts and burners so that they are both now 50 watt HIDs.

The Hellas DE xenon premiums I got off a german guy on Ebay. They cost about 250 quid a pair (they retail for about £400 quid a pair). You can get the old stlye black DE xenons (non premium - the type that touratech sell in singles) for about £235 a pair. The premiums though are meant to have a redesigned more effective reflector and made of better materials. For a link to the lights, see here:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....MEWA:IT&viewitem=&item=260071399291&rd=1&rd=1

Note though that there are Hella halogen driving beam lights in the Micro DE series that could probably be converted to HID. If you wanted to go down that route, you would need to get a pair of Hella prt no 1KL 009 486-001 and then a H9 conversion kit to HID if required. The problem with those is that you will need to develop some sort of custom mounting for it. If you look at the pics of that unit on the Hella site, you will see that they are designed to be mounted onto a flat vertical surface.

As for the mountings I used for the HID driving lights, I will try and get some pics up a little later.

Hope that helps mate

Here is a pic of the mounting ... ended up welding a small mounting piece of steel off the back of the lightbar. It makes a more stable mounting platform and also allows for aligning the top light with the bottom BMW fogs.

Bloody hell Walter, you don't do things by halves!!!!! :thumb2

No mate, I think I have excelled myself this time. After a good couple of saturdays faffing about getting it all working exactly the way I wanted, its all finally sorted now.

Just went for a run through a unlit stretch of Hyde Park to test the high beams (3 x 50watt HIDs) and I have to say, its totally insane!!

You see the light coming out the front of the bike and you just have to shake your head and laugh.

I think I am going to stop now. :bounce1 :guitarist
