I am trying to retrieve the tracklog of a recent daytrip from my Zumo 660 but when I connect it to my Macbook, the SD card is recognised but not the internal storage.

Mac Finder only shows the SD card, same with Basecamp. The unit is not recognised by Garmin Express.

I tried using Windows XP on the Mac but Windows Explorer and Mapsource only show the SD card. I also tried on an ancient Dell laptop running Windows XP. I've also tried different USB cables.

The SD card holds my CN Europe NT 2010.10 map, the current route and waypoints, but it seems the tracklog is on the internal storage. I can see the tracklog segments when I interrogate the Zumo through >my data >manage trip logs.

I don't want to do a factory reset as this will delete the tracklog. Any ideas?

Tim, try deleting or turning off Garmin Express, if you have it installed. Garmin Express might (this is just a guess) be over occupying the device’s time.

Failing that, try installing and then updating Garmin Express, to see if that helps.

Report back.

Make sure no other USB devices (hubs, printers etc) are connected.

There are no other USB devices connected. And bear in mind I had the same result when I tried this on an antiquated Dell running Windows. Also my iMac desktop.

It doesn't appear to be the cable, as it works transferring waypoints backwards and forwards to the SD card storage.

Using the Zumo menus I can interrogate the waypoints, routes and tracklogs held on internal storage (the waypoints and routes on the SD card are just the last transfer).

So it just seems to be the inability of the internal storage to declare itself to the PC (Mac or Windows).

I agree with your conclusion: So it just seems to be the inability of the internal storage to declare itself to the PC (Mac or Windows).

Now, who has got a fix?

I’ll copy the thread across to the Computer section for you.

What about removing the sd card then reconnecting, I once had a phone that would only see intenal memory with the memory card removed.

Yes, I tried that. Same when removed, same when replaced.

I've managed to retrieve the two sections of tracklog I needed by converting them to routes and then sharing to the SD card which is still accessible. I was then able to download them to Basecamp.

I think I should now call Garmin support to work out what to do next. I'd love to get the European maps onto the internal memory as it's quite sluggish with them on the SD card.

Thanks everyone for the help today.

Tim, you’ll maybe find that Garmin no longer support the model of device you have. If you’d like it repaired (if that is possible) there is a sticky in the GPS section.

By default, map updates (due to their size) go to the SD card. They should not be too slow when being displayed. I guess, if and when you can access them, it might be possible to drag them across but it shouldn’t, I don’t think, make them much faster.

very little difference to be had with maps on internal mem, external sd card will be fine(unless listening to music from said card aswell) but i would recomend a fast sd card as the external source, what may help is doing a factory restore (putting it back to how it was when new) but dont forget to back up the important things you need to save.

I attempted a factory restore, it didn't work as advertised as rather than removing all my waypoints it added more!

I phoned Garmin support who advised how to get into the diagnostics screen... from the main menu, choose volume and then place finger on top left of screen... nothing happened... not my day.

The unit can't be replaced as it's too old, but I have the opportunity of upgrading to a new model at 30% discount. Not sure if I will do this as I already have a BMW Navigator VI as my main GPS.

Is there anything out there (in Garmin's range) that's worthwhile having? How about the Zumo XT?

To switch into mass storage mode you need to press the top right of the screen I believe.

There is an entire sub-section devoted to the joys or otherwise of the XT.
