Headlight height knob adjuster detail

sorry to ask, but my horiz / vert lever thingy that quickly adjusts headlight height, fell to bits and i have 3 bits of black plastic that i cant seem to fit. all that i can see at the back of the headlight cluster is a hole with a rough edged metal pin exposed by a few mm. Is a spring missing, or does the plastic hex 'nut' just push onto the metal pin?
i cant find any detail of the lever.

hex nut screws onto the 'pin' inside the adjustment flip thing. I remember it only goes on two ways. when you getit right it is obvious cos it flips. when wrong it wont flip. thats all i remember HTH
