As you do, started the GS up one morning, oh! what's this warning icon on the screen. Headlight not working. Check main beam, that's ok.......switched bulbs dipped beam not working....switched the bulb back to main bean ...works. Ok not the bulb then.

Any one had this problem? Any suggested course of action I can try before taking the bike to the main dealer?

Hi Mike, Have you started the engine?? the dipped beam wont come on untill your engine is running, put the main beam bulb in the dip and start her up, if that works it's the bulb !! and yes the indicator warning light could be lit for either main, dip, sidelight or an indicator bulb!! I hope that helps.

That's what i love about this site, no matter how experienced you think you are you can be stumped over the little things, especially when it's your own bike and there are friendly people around for help and advice:beerjug:

Headlight problem

As a post script, why starting the bike up didn't really occur to me was the fact that the main beam works with the engine not running, I presumed the dipped headlight worked in the same way.....those damn Germans!!!

The dip is left off so that most of the power from the battery can be fed to the starter motor when needed - some older bikes the dip was on but went out when starting and then came back on.

The main comes on with the switch so does not need automatic control as it normally would not be on when starting.
