Headlight Protectors

I’ve just ordered some fog light protectors from a guy on the civic mk8 FB group and he is highly recommended by the group.

Because of this, I’ve asked him about round protectors as I thought these would be like the old Areoflow ones you used to be able to get. The only problem with those tended to be the stupid price of importing them from the US.

I showed him a pic of the ones on my 1150 and he was surprised that they were flat discs with open edges, and I agreed that this let’s muck in behind, so they need removing and washing behind each time I wash the bike.

He sent me a pic of the round cover he makes for the mk9/10 civics and confirmed he can make these the same size as the 2 1150 GS lights for £35 a set, delivered. The difference is that his are domed and fitted with 3M dual lock pads so they seal to the edge of the headlight. No more having to wash behind them...

I thought some on here might like a better way of protecting the very expensive headlights on the 1150... £35 or £100+ for high or low beam secondhand units

Pics below of my Aeroflow ones, followed by the fog lights I’ve ordered and a shot of the domed alternative for the GS. They can be in loads of colours, so not just yellow...

Anyone interested? I’m sending him the dimensions of mine so he will have a template for any others.

I’ve sent the guy the dimensions of my headlights and he’s making up a set which should be with me next weekend. I’ll post some pics and his details then.

I’m definitely interested in buying a pair. I take the flat ones off my GS in winter because of the reduction in headlamp power that happens when crud gets behind it.

I shall be interested as well.
I had REALLY thick sticky stuff on the lens, was on them when I bought years ago.
Many days of long rides (not less than 800km / 500mile type long days) and the low beam actually burnt and the globe failed
I put it down to hot weather and continous running (except for stopping for fuel not more than 10minutes)

Should have some protection on them

I made some for my 640 adv bike cutting 2 circular discs of perspex and fixed with self adhesive Velcro

Good idea to to have some kind of headlamp protection, you never know when something might happen

IKWYM... I have another headlight set in the garage because a stone took out the dipped beam and I found a full headlight set as an eBay bargain.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but there’s been nothing since I fitted the discs all those years ago. Replacements are horrendously expensive these days.

About 16 years ago when I had my first 1150GS I did a track day at Caldwell Park & they insisted on using gaffer tape over my black metal grill type light protectors due to the no running light allowed rule. Didn’t have a problem with it until after when I realised the heat had bounced back & cracked both lenses.

That was the most expensive track day in history!

Paul - I’d like a set but can you explain a bit more about the fitting please mate?

I have LEDs fitted these days, so I don’t expect the same level of heat as when I was using halogens or HIDs

The guy sends them with 3M dual lock pads for fitting, just like the AeroFlow ones fitted in my first pic and just visible in the corners of the fog lights.

I’ll post some picks of the ones he’s sending me this week which are expected to be slightly domed - something like the yellow one in the first post.

Right, ladies and gents, the new protectors arrived this morning so I’ve been out and fitted them. All I can say is; I am very pleased/impressed with the quality of these. Very well packaged, so arrived in perfect condition with clear instructions and pre-cut 3M dual lock pads.

They look great on the GS and you’ll see below that they are slightly domed to accommodate the curvature at the edge of the lenses. They were a doddle to fit and are held nice and securely.

Those look like the best design yet. I've had two circles of very thick 3M "helicopter tape"/"clear bra" on mine for nearly 20 years and 42,000 miles without any issues - no peeling or discoloration. I had a big sheet of the stuff and used it for this on other lights as well, including the unobtanium headlight on my '83 Honda XL600R.

So while I don't need these protectors OP referred to us, I want them.

My pair should be arriving tomorrow so I’ll take a photo of them before fitting, one of the fixing method and one of them fitted.

I’ve got a pair of Baja Sport LED lights on my Husqvarna FE501 and I’ll be asking Wayne about making a pair of protectors for them because at £320 I really don’t want to be replacing them

That’s it, they’re fitted and they look really good. With hindsight I could have cut the pads a bit smaller and they’d have been secure but hindsight is a wonderful thing.

You have time before the adhesive cures, to trim the pads down and refit them, if you want. Noticed the same thing and made them slightly smaller and not so tight to the edge of the discs so they sit flush.

They do look nice, though
