Heated Grips Intermittent Failure

Hi All,

My heated grips keep failing on me intermittently. The bike is an '08 GS about 3 weeks old.

About a week ago I hopped on the bike in the pissing rain and cold and went for the grip heaters but nothing worked. Later on that day I tried them again and they were fine. Mentioned it to my dealer when I took it in for the 1,000km service and he said he had a good look but couldn't see any problems with them. Computer showed no error of any kind either. We put it down to one off.

Then this morning in the pissing rain and freezing cold again went for the grip heaters and nothing. Half way through my commute I turned them off and switched the ignition off at a traffic light. Switched the ignition back on again and started her up, switched the grip heaters back on and hey presto they were working again.

On the way to the gym after work no problem and they were still working fine. After the gym on the way home and they weren't working again.

Not really sure what is going on here. I'm not too concerned as I have confidence in my dealer to replace them under warranty, so I'll go see him this weekend again, but thought I would mention it here to see if anyone else has experienced something similar.

Cheers,
Delirious.

SAME PROBLEM WITH MINE!

The fix seems to be either ..

1. Switch the grips to ON when you start the bike.
2. Run the bike with the grips failing .. then switch off .. wait a bit .. then do number1.

Pain in the arse when I was going through some freezing cold places last week.

Hope to get it sorted at next service

I think the test bike (GS) I took out was doing this. When I first went out the grips weren't working and mentioned it when I got back. The Service guy muttered something to the saleman about waiting for a CD :nenau

I then took out a K1200S for a test and when I came back decided to take the GS out again (undecided which to go for  ) this time the grips worked.

Posted before on grips not working regarding on my new 08gsa, dropped into the dealer who cleared an error code on the grips and all was well again.

Out again yesterday , early . Pop the grips on ......nothing. Stopped for petrol. Turned bike on , and had left grips switched on accidentally, and back working again.

Service due soon so will take it up with them again !

I picked up my new 08 GSA on Saturday ( :bounce1 :bounce1 :bounce1), during the handover they went to great lengths to explain this new "feature". I was not phased by this becuase I had seen the thread on here advising that the 'grips will not work if the switch is on the "on" position before turning the ignition on.
I accidentally "tested" this at a pee break on the Long Way Home, but found that they do work like the 04-07 models. Guess that means that they have just released a software fix for this? So, it does pee you off, drop in to your dealer and ask if they have the new CD and to update your bike. Although, as we move in to a warmer period it may be best to wait until the next service, just in case the new software release has some other surprise "features" ?

I actually noticed the opposite. The first day I had them failing on me was when I was very diligently switching them off before cutting the ignition and only switching them on when the bike was running. Had nothing nada zip out of them. I left them on full hoping they would come to life, I then stopped at a shop to pick up some groceries and forgot I had left the grip heater switch on. Anyway when I jumped back on the bike and fired her up I noticed the grip heaters started to work instantly I checked the switch thinking I'd turned them off and noticed I'd left it on.

Perhaps mine work in the opposite way. I.e. only work when the switch is in the on position when you start the bike :nenau

My grips are all over the place..

sometimes they work sometimes not, engine on first, grips on first. But I've noticed a post about a couple of recent recalls and one of them is to replace the grips, so hopefully that will solve it. :eek
