Just picked up a Gerbings Heated fleece thingy and nearly died from heatstroke when I first plugged it in. So I need to get some sort of control on it. What do you use to control the heated liner? On/off switches, or variable controllers? Where do you have the controller so it's handy, but not in the way? Does the Gerbing temp controller actually work? (I've heard some of these controllers are more like glorified on/off switches).

Any input gratefully received before I go spending money! :)

Yup, the Gerbing heat controller is essential unless you want to be slowly cooked. I've got a bit of velcro stuck on the back of my controller, and have it attached to the belt of my riding jacket - it sandwiches between extra length for adjustment and the belt itself. Easy then to get to with gloved fingers, and it only needs to be disconnected from the heated liner when the outer jacket is removed.

I'm not sure what is inside the controller - it is quite small and feels more like a solid-state device than a wire-wound rheostat. I think it adjusts the temperature by pulsing the current on and off, so if the liner temperature is minimal it is sometimes possible to notice the liner repeatedly warming up then cooling. I've never found this to be a problem. I've had mine for 3 years or so and it's been 100% reliable.
