Heavy duty tubes not authorised for roads?

I'm about to swap my TKC's for Heidi's in order to do a few thousand miles across Europe and am looking for heavy duty tubes to stick in but I keep on coming across warnings saying

"Caution!!! These are not authorised for use on the roads!"

So - first question is "why"? and the second question is
"do any of you run heavy duty tubes on long road rides and have you had any negative experiences"?

I've run standard tubes with Slime in the TKC's to date which has been fine so far but I would like a bit of extra peace of mind if there are no adverse reasons.

I've read somewhere that insurance could be invalidated if something does go wrong and they decide the tubes were the cause ........can anyone validate this?

The thicker the rubber, the more heat that is generated, which could cause a blowout. I have used HD tubes for years and never had a problem, there again slimed tubes are as good. Ref your insurance, if you had an accident with tubes marked up, not for highway use, you can bet your bottom dollar they will invalidate it. Saying that, are the tubes actually marked up? or is it just on the box?

Shouldn't worry about the tubes the Heidi's are not on BMW approved list!
Its a very short list of approved tyres for the 800GS but use what you feel work for you, providing you stay within the speed ratings for the tyres all should be OK. I run Tourance with Metzeler HD tubes (neither are on the BMW recomended list!) and have had no problems in over 50,000 miles on the 800GS

You will not get a rear one, you wil have to use one that fit's 140/80 and 150/60and 160/60 I have a spare set of Michelin tubes if you have trouble finding them.

Have run HD tubes for the last 22000 miles with no problems.

I have smeared them all over in silicone grease to cut down on the friction between them and the tyre which should reduce the temperatures generated. No idea if has had any effect other than to say they've not popped yet!

And they're easy to fit / remove...
