Helicoil or Time Sert ??????

It's a long story :blast

Basically my head is now being removed because of a cross threaded spark plug ... Anyone used helicoil or Time Sert?

I understand it's quite a straight forward procedure for a proffessional but any ideas on cost?

Also anyone know of an engineer in the Yorkshire region that could do this?

I hope you've not taken it off yet... It's not always necessary. Snap-On for example do sleeves specifically to do spark plug thread. Yes, helicoils are often used and often the name is used generically as in vacuum/hoover but take advice from a reputable cylinder head shop.
Time Sert is fitting a larger threaded bush in. I've seen a few bodged. The helicoil tye is likely to be all that's needed but take care..!

Hi mate, the problem is the position of the Dakar plugs! I reckon a tough job to get a tap in. Also the shit that could drop down into the combustion chamber means a safer bet I think to just take the head off.

Proper bad day for me :blast I have a trip to France booked next week on the bike also!! bugger

Thanks for the info anyhow .. Helicoil may be the way, just found an engineering firm in Doncaster called Arnetts so giving them a call in the morning for some advice.

Dependent on how badly fecked up the thread is you could use a 'thread chaser' it worked for me on a petrol lawn mower, but higher compresion on m/cycle might make it 'iffy'. Personally I'd at least give it a try as it would be a cheap version.

time sert needs more room around it and is much stronger - helicoil is much smaller.

Depends on the valve proximity - i'd be happy with a helicoil done properly
 
Head removal is not an easy job on the Dakar but will make you life infinitely easier especially when you come to put the weird threaded tap in.

When you do put the helicoil in, make sure the head is dry and clean before you run the helicoil tap. I use brake disc cleaner. Then use a drop of loctite on the coil itself.

A tip for the future, before screwing in any bolt with a parallel thread, turn it back the wrong way until you feel the two thread starts fall in to place.
 
Ohh bad luck mate, Defo take the head off. Anything can fall in and fubar your compression/rings.
Once the head is off take the whole thing to the engineers, Get them to do the re-tap and all the engineering stuff. Trying to bodge the spark plug...its a single piston so the pressure is huge and if not done right will blow the s/plug out....good luck..
PS it took nearly a year for my first ss1000 to be validated, your lucky mate.....as always ..Tosh

Cheers Tosh, head is off and it's now being Helicoiled by Arnetts engineers in Doncaster .... hopefully head back on tomorrow :D

Um - so if the compression ratio in a F800 is 12:1 and in a six cylinder K1600 it's 12.2:1 :nenau

Ye canna change the laws of physics...
The 6 little cylinders in the 1600 go to more pressure than a single cylinder F650 which goes to 9.7:1 compression ratio.

you are possibly right,
I was working on the size of a 650 piston in one pot compared to 4 little pistons in 4 little pots.
650cc/4 = 163.5cc per cylinder.
Its easier to compress 163.5cc than 650cc..
But as you state the ratio's for the 800cc twin and the 1600 six pot is higher
 
we use heli coils on all out aircraft engine parts.

so much so we insert the helisoil as part of manufacture as its stromger than parent material so thousands or pratt and whitney engines cant be wrong so should suit a rotax

Well my bike is fixed after a week of hell :blast

2 lessons learnt ...

In future I'll take my time to replace spark plugs :tears

Secondly I'll never ever pay a BMW dealership in Rotherham to do work on my bike again ... Staff are great but their prices are absolutley extortionate :mad:

Probably burnt my bridges here but being billed £12.79 for fitting and removing a workshop stand and £12.79 for removing 6 bolts to take my hand guards off on top of a bill for £620 for other labour on the head slightly raised my blood pressure once I sat down and read the invoice ....

Now time to relax and pack for my European trip, I'll have to reduce my beer intake by 5% for the week to pay for the repairs :D

well as i always tell people, get a haynes manual, check the forum, tidy garage and do the work yourself. unless full engine strip and rebuild, most jobs are easy tackle when take time

how much have you paid in total in repairs and stuff since youve owned the bike mate ???

I reckon about £1300 with tyres since April ..... :blast
Obviously my biggest bill has been for my latest cock up !!!!
 
wurth timesert

I have used wurth time serts for years far better fix than helecoil and far less likely to pull out buying the intial kit was expensive but the actual inserts are cheap enough on ebay
