Hi I'm Phil,

Joined this site to get a little info. I'm thinking of getting a GS but not sure witch one to go for do I go for. Do i buy a 1150cc or a 1200cc is there a great deal of difference, what advantages is there with the Adventure models and what optional extras are worth having?. Help & advise needed.

Hi phil, another Phil here from Stoke.

Try them. As much as people will tell you what to do, it's best to try them yourself. The 1150 is agricultural but has more character, the 1200 is faster, quicker handling and a fair bit lighter but lacks the character of the old 1150.

Personally I'd have an 1150, feels a bit more planted on the road, but many others prefer the 1200.

ADV is taller, has a huge tank and costs more. If you have the cash buy an ADV (as long as you are tall enough).

Anyway with reference to your questions, i guess its down to preference. But not only that, its down to what you want from your bike, what you will be using it for, how tall you are and how much coin you have to spend!

I personally think the 1200gs is a bike aimed for middle age business men having a mid life crisis that involves being a wannabe ewan or charlie and copious amounts of just for men! it reminds me a little bit of people who buy toyota prius cars. Lol

The 1200gs adventure is the same really, just taller and more expensive. Again the afore mentioned mid life crisis bunch buy em and never go near a dirt track, or a foreign land for that matter! Lol. Pointless. They are bikes for the people who buy into the gs 'fashion' in my opinion. They are less rugged, less pure somehow.

Both 1200 bikes will perform well, but for the real deal you need an 1150gs /gs adventure or maybe an earlier 1100 gs. Those bikes were built for the job, built to conquer the world, long before ewan and charlie were in the forefront of public opinion.

All i can suggest is riding a few, and taking a good hard look at what you will use the bike for. Both the 1200 and 1150 have good and bad points. Its subjective at the end of the day though. I love the 1150's. Some love the 1200's. just a thought though, look how many 1200s are up for sale compared to 1150's. That might tell you something! Lol

All I'll say is try them all, but not a quick ride around the block. If you are coming off japs you 'may' prefer the 12 series, if your coming off a Moto Guzzi or drive a land rover etc you 'may' go the 11 series

Me.. I'm an 1150 man and no I've never had a Moto Guzzi (yet)

Just go for a long ride on them

However, i still think the 1200 is off somehow. As mentioned in my last post, there are loads of 1200's on the 2nd hand market shortly after their initial purchase. The market appears to be saturated. There must be a reason why? Yet 1150's are quite rarely on the 2nd hand market (rare compared to the 1200 that is.). People seem to keep hold of them. Again, there must be a reason why? Maybe im barking up the wrong tree! It would not be the first time!

But then again maybe im not...................
