What do you do with your old helmets? Over the years I have got quit a collection. I just can`t bring myself to just throw them out. Iv even got one that is totally destroyed.Just cant throw it in the bin. It saved my life. others just so old and plain smelly. Now the reason for the post. I want to get another one, Tour X maybe! I have tried hiding them but the wife seems to sence where they are. Of course I need a new one. Whats wrong with that one in the back off the wardrobe she says. Dam thought i had got away with it then. So, what reasoned arguments, excuses or threats. work for you. Or are you a helmet horder like me. :duck:

Turn 'em upside down fill 'em with compost and plant something in 'em:D

Tell her something she can understand and relate to, such as it's just like shoes to a woman!

P.S. Try some female type logic too! There's no VAT on helmets, so buying them actually saves money!

I`ve got eight helmets on shelves in my back bedroom, although three of them are technically 'retired' now.
They`re just there,in full view, giving me pleasure to look at, as the memories of previous bike rides playback, and the thought of future journeys cross my mind....
They`re also a conversation piece when friends visit.
Mind you,I live alone,so don`t have a missus chewing my ear.... :hapybnce:

Safety.

The polysterene & foam deteriorate over time, they compress (so the helmet becomes looser)and harden (therefore less shock absorption).

So ask the wife if your head is a $5 one or a $50 one.

I usually get a new helmet when the old one has had a knock or it is so old (5yrs) that I start to think its probably not as safe as it was. When the new one is purchased the old one is ceremonally dispatched with a couple of blows with a lump hammer, so nobody would want to wear it on a bike again and then bin it.

Give them to St Johns Ambulance or other first aid type places, they use them to practise the safe removal from the bonce after an accident..;)

Ditto...the TT Marshals association over here use them for training as well...;)

Don't recommend passing them on to where they might end up being used for protection, however well intentioned. People riding around in ill fitting helmets that are knackered is a bit of a recipe for disaster. However, will echo the previous threads about giving them to your local ambulance/first aid/marshall service. They are very handy for training. I know that if I was ever unfortunate enough to need someone else to remove my helmet (oo-er!) I'd want them to have had as much practice in the technique as possible.

If anyone is in Central London you can drop old helmets into London Ambulance Service HQ at 220 Waterloo Rd. SE1 marked up for attn. Larry Perkin, Motorcycle Response Unit and I will pass them on to the Training Dept. and ambulance stations for continuous training.

Cheers.

Remove all paddings, drill some holes to shell, fill with soil and plant flowers.

Looks good!
