could someone post up a picture for me of a gs 12 using the helmet locks under the seat.i,m just wondering how they are used.cheers.

I haven't got a pic - in fact not even sure that my helmet will do it, but the idea is you slip the d-ring of the strap over the hook under the seat and then lock the seat over it. On a lot of helmets the strap will be too short so it won't work.

I usually carry a top box that the helmet goes in, but on the odd occasion when the top box is full, I also have a short plastic coated cable with a loop at each end (designed for use with a padlock on a push bike) that can be passed around the chin guard and then clipped over the helmet lock loops under the seat.

Not sure if Ztechnik do one for the UK but they do a lock system that mounts behind the rear number plate

I read a story somewhere that a helmet was stolen by a scooter rider. #
The helmet was locked in the bike's helmet lock by the 'D' ring of the strap.
The thief simply used a knife and cut the strap, and made his escape on his scooter with the lid.

I have made up a small chain/padlock combo and that goes around/through the Tour-X and then around the rear rack on my GS. Although it could still be cut, it would need something heavier than a penknife to do so.

As you question made me realize I hadn't tried the helmet lock on the GS, I now have some piccies and a Shoei helmet (even with the Cardo Scala mount fitted) can be locked with the D-Rings

Using the D-Rings over the lock:

Using a Cable:

I'd recommend putting the helmet bag over the lid before mounting as then the helmet won't be damaged if it clips the frame.

You should be able to attach the pillion helmet in the same way to the other side.

The cable method allows the helmet to rest on the rubber of the footpeg.

Security-wise if they cut the strap they can't use the helmet, if they cut the cable they can.
Also there is a vey slim possibility that a cable could be jiggled off the bar of the lock this is unlikely with the D-rings as it is a very tight fit.

Smart theif...Nicked a helmet he cannot use...................:augie

And ruined some hard workin innocent owners ride/day/Tour.

What a prick.

thanks for the replies.the pac safe looks a good idea.expensive for two helmets tho.

When I bought my GS the dealer advised me to never use the helmet lock as they had too many reports of riders coming back to their bike to find a strap and no helmet so I bought a couple of the Pacsafe helmet bags. After three years of use I can highly recommend them. Not only is the helmet secure but it stays clean and dry and its practical to put things like gloves and satnav inside as well.

I think £100 for a couple of bags to protect abut £750 worth of helmets plus being sure you can ride away legally when you return to the bike is worth every penny.
