Cars are totally different. The sound doesn't block out what is going on outside (unless you have it particularly loud). The problem with bikes is that the sound is right next to your ear and is much more distracting than the kind of ambient noise you get in a car and removes you from what is happening in the outside world.

It's not for nothing that Shure advise against wearing headphones whilst driving. I won't even use my MP3 player on a pushbike as it means I'm less aware of what is going on around me.

Maybe it's me but I'd say don't do it.

Sensorcom Microbuds

Leading on from my previous post. The microbuds arrived next day and the sound quality is not bad (Bass response is a bit lacking but its good enough).
Now for the down side the sound isolation is by foam plugs with a tube through the middle or by 'xmas tree' shaped silicon plugs.
The silicon didn't seem to block out hardly any noise at all so I never even tried them on the bike.
I wore the foam plugs on a recent ride over to wales and it was okay upto 50-ish, beyond that I didnt feel that it offered enough hearing protection. Also after 3 hours I had to take them out as they were starting to hurt a bit.
All in all a cheap solution which is okay of lower speed short trips.
You can get custom moulded ear plugs for £60 which may well be better but in the end I bought an autocom system for the return journey. I wired it directly across the battery at a motorway services and thouroughly enjoyed quality sound all the way home wearing my earplugs.
Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and pay the money.....

At the risk of being shot down for shameless self promotion £60 is a lot more than what Green Leopard plugs go for... They vary slightly from agent to agent (some have higher overheads) but are around £45 and they're properly CE rated (SNR-30)

Sorry, I just don't like people paying more than they need to.

No problem. I dont intend to get any, however these plugs are made to fit the microbuds monitors which I doubt green leopard will do.

I do intend to get a set of moulded plugs (hopefully at the tail end show) either ultimate ear or green leopard. It just depends whose there and, if theres more than one, which one appeals the most (service wise).

..erm.. we can make earplugs to fit with any headphones. You will need to leave the headphones with us for a short while but the plugs can be shaped to fit.

Green Leopard will be at the Tail End although I'm not sure I will be there in person but the guys will answer any questions you have.
