I've been told to put a 'fragile' sticker on and it will travel with other 'fragile' items. I'm hopeing they just let me carry it on.

I've done a number of jobs at airports in the baggage handling areas and would never put a lid /camera or anything fragile in a case going in the hold.
A number of baggage handlers take it as a personal challenge to drop anything marked fragile from the top of the pile of luggage on the baggage trolleys onto concrete (approx 6 feet).

I always put my helmet in teh hold. I have a good protective cover for it and stuff the inside with my smalls and a couple of t-shirts. Never had a problem yet

I've carried my hyelmet as hand baggage on many flights and have never been questioned about it. It's always in a helmet bag ( like this one: http://www.bustersclassic.co.uk/proddetail.asp?prod=T7DHB and I just put the stuff I need on the flight inside the helmet. I certainly wouldn't check it in as I'd have no idea what indignities the baggage handlers would subject it to and It's my head inside it after the flight!
