I have just arrived in York for business and the main final drive oil seal has given up, putting the oil over the hotel car park! I can feel the bearing is rough as hell and the wheel has top to bottom play in it.
The REALLY annoying thing is, that I only had the final drive rebuilt and all the bearings replaced about 3,000 miles ago (6-8 weeks) by someone who really (no honestly, he really does) knows what he's doing with BMW bikes.

Anyway, I have had it towed by a recovery firm in Scholes, between Leeds and York, who say they will strip it in the morning, and try and fix it.
I reaally need the bike working for the next 10 days, so it really can't sit around. But on the flip side, I haven't got another £500 to sort it like the last time.

I have a feeling they won't have much luck, but just in case, does anyone know of a local stockist (or has someone got one sitting on a shelf?) of the bearings and seal, to get me up and running? Is there an alternative set of bearings from a different make/model that fit?
Perhaps a 2nd hand final drive unit? is it easier to swap over?

I live 200miles away from where I am now, so any help would be gratefully accepted. You can either reply to this or text me on 0 78 07509 5 4 3.

I'm off to drown my sorrows in the bar and will login in the morning, before I go to work.

Cheers!

Hi,

I'm in York and have a complete swinging arm/final drive in my garage, it's like new, but it may be off an RT.

If you need it or if I can help, call me on 07846 380086.

Cheers,

Andy

Many Thanks Andy,

I've taken your number and will let you know what the recovery chaps say later... either way.

£500

The parts are less than £40 and it's about an hour, maybe two at the most to replace bearing, seal and O-ring.

There must be someone nearby who (like many of us) carry these parts with them and can let you have theirs on a replacement basis? :nenau

(Even if you don't feel competent enough to do the repair yourself, it's worth carrying the parts so that they can be handed over to someone who is).

Are you sure the guy knew what he was doing when he rebuilt it?.. there must be comeback if a job failed that quickly by someone you paid to do it properly:nenau

Andy's offer sounds the best fix by far, but if you want parts:

Barrie Robson Motorcycles (BMW Dealer)

There is a chance Barry might have the bits in, Otherwise he can usualy get them next day. I live in York and have tools/hydralic bench etc if needed 0795 179 6268

Good luck ;)

Go for it guys! Let's see how we can help out a fellow GSer :thumb

I live about 1 mile from where your bike has been recovered to (Sirrells), if I can help in any way with tools, transport or storage pm me for numbers etc.
Sirrells are also "Bike Tyres Leeds" and I think reasonably clued up with bike repairs so you should be ok.

Sorted... to a degree...

Well Chaps, gotta say how chuffed I've been with the response.

I'm now at home and got the bike recovered after the recovery firm could not source a hub bearing anywhere near Leeds... even taking it to some bearing manufacturers to see if they had something..... to no avail.

Andy in York has been ace... many thanks....

I took the part into the recovery firm and they ummed and ahhed and suggested a few things but, tbh, I though it might be a "hit n hope" kinda repair, so I went for the recovery home, £70 lighter for the privelage of them taking the final drive apart.

Driver was great, dropping the bike off at Andrew Sexton in Hook Norton, who also has been very good really and agreed to do the necessary FOC. I do believe it must have been a faulty bearing (Andrew is of the same opinion), as his reputation and expertise is locally well known (that's why I got him to do it in the first place). I am confident that when he fitted it, we both expected it to last another 70,000 miles!

Fingers and toes crossed, I'll be back on the road for Friday, as I'm back up north for next week as well.

NB: The £500 totalled up from replacing all the bearings and seals in and around the final drive unit and the labour involved. I had lost the plastic breather cap on the top of the final drive unit, without noticing it was missing and got water into the unit, ruining the bearings etc. (If a dealer had done it, it would have been considerably more)

Thanks again, hitting the wine to wind down now,

Scott,

Glad I could help, see you next week.

Hi Scud, just seen your post.

I'm self employed and get cheques in all the time. I thought it was for a job.

Is your name Lloyd ?

Cheers,

Andy
