went out for a thrash on my 03 1150 gs last night,,,after about half an hour it became very difficult to change down gear by the time i got to my destination it was near impossible to change down,,,after about an hour i set off for home and gears were fine no problem but by the time i got home it was the same as before almost impossible to change down ,,went up through the gears no problem anyone had this problem or heard of it?? cheers gordon :thumb2

clutch slave cylinder problem?someone who knows will be here in a min

Check the gear lever pivot bush - they are prone to seizing and not returning to 'centre'. In any case it's worth dismantling, cleaning and lubing it (make sure you remove the bush and not just the pivot bolt).

Another vote for the gear lever pivot bush.
Winter crud/shyte gets in there, strip it down and give it a right good clean :thumb2
Gearchanges will soon be back to their old clunky self.

Take the starter cover off (its one screw only) check the input link is tight on the splines mine wasn,t but was not really temperature dependent...

took the gear linkage apart everything seems ok cleaned and lubed put back together took the bike for a short run same problem :blast would not shift down from 5th will have to wait till tomorow to get my manual back to check the slave cylinder as i dont know where it is though i was thinking if there was a problem with the slave cylinder would the clutch just not work :nenau

Hmm, I think you're in Steptoe (or similar guru) territory here. I've seen discussion about 1150 slave cylinder issues but no experience myself cos I've got an 1100.

Hope you get sorted quickly :thumb2

I've had a similar problem and cleaned and lubed the linkage, problem returned shortly afterwards. Eventually removed the gearlever from its pivot point for a clean and relube.

Worked perfectly afterwards.

Have you cleaned & lubed the gear lever pivot?

Gear change

This is the pivot if it was the clutch you'd notice it pulling away and it would'nt disengage and drag. Take the pivot off this bolt is put on with locktight and it is! so heat it up first probably need to take the foot rest hanger off to get an allen key in to it (best part of having a "Y" piece!).
lube it and put it back don't forget the locktight. Do this and your probs will be over.

Do a search for your problem, it's very common - it's not just the linkage, but the gear lever that needs lubing. Remove the gearlever AND from the footrest hanger and the bush in the gearlever and lube them both. And don't use WD40, use real grease.

it's nothing to do with slave cylinders, you don't even need to use the clutch to change gears.

He says he's taken the linkage apart - that means different things to different people. Most assume the linkage is the problem, not the gear lever.
If i were to read that not knowing what i know i'd just think of the "ball pivots", and not actually remove the whole gearlever. Many have lubed just the ball joints in the past after similier info :thumb

Leave no doubt when posting.

Absolutely. Wasn't directed at you - more the OP. Guess because I've done it, I'm 'too close' and didn't see the potential for misinterpretation in my post. Technical author, I'm not :D

thankyou very much to all who took the time to reply to my problem,,, as predicted it was the bush in the gear lever which had seized something which i would never have thought would have had such a dramatic effect on the gearchange once again thank you all :thumb2

Glad you got it sorted :thumb2

Have just read this post and wondered if this is likely to explain the reason my '04 1150 gsa (36k miles) is a real pig to get from neutral into first when it starts sometimes. Does this sound likely or should I be looking elsewhere.

I've noticed that when it warms up, it's much better.

Thanks.
