A mate has got a Honda 1989/90 XL250s which I frankly would set fire to or abandon it for the Local Authority to pick up, he on the other hand wants to restore it and has asked me to ask you for the following help.

The wiring is shot to pieces so he asks could he convert it to Magneto ignition:nenau,or would it be easier to get a new loom. Does anyone know where he could get either a Magneto or new loom from. Also anyone know if it's still possible to get a workshop manual for his particular bike.

The bike is only going to used offroad around a farm so it doesn't need lights.

Any help/advice gratefully received:thumb2

Edit: Restore may be the wrong word, just get it running might be more accurate:eek:

Hi Dickie

If its an 89/90 it will more likely be a XL250R,the S was produced from 78 - 81 but it could be an import, the S has 6 volt electrics and a 23 in front wheel, whereas the R was 12 volt 21 in.

The wiring is very simple and its quite possible to make a new loom for one especially if it does not need to be road legal.

Haynes did make manual for them and you could probably pick one up on e bay if they are no longer published.

Dave Silver spares is good for any old Honda parts and has list of available parts for each model on their web site.

Consumables are still easily available and Electrex is good for electrical components and can repair ignition of lighting coils if they have burned out.

They are good solid basic machines,I have owned my 1981 S since 1983 and its still going strong despite tons of offroad use and two Cambrians.

Well worth restoring !

Thanks for all that lads, I'll relay the info to Will and take it from there:thumb2
