HELP - Fuel tank imploding

Anyone had this? It would seem there is/has been a blockage in the breather pipe:eek::eek:

Anyway, I now have a lovely, but slightly distorted, fuel tank. The paintwork is still immaculate.

Any of you gurus know of an outfit who might repair the tank?

I'd be inclined to try a fix myself......

You'd have to remove and block up the lines on the spigots internally (all bar one anyway) then you could use a bicycle pump (probably with lots of PTFE tape around the spigot to seal it) to pump up the tank.

I definitely wouldn't use an air line, but a bike pump will easily go to pressure and is nicely controllable :nenau

(You may need to squidge a bead of plasticine or blu-tac around the lip under the filler cap to seal it, as it's a positive pressure rather than a vacuum)

Can't see that you'd have much to lose.......the tank has to come off anyway if someone else is going to deal with it :beerjug:
 
Fuel pump sucked in the fuel tank and dented my original when it was fairly new.

The breather pipes were blocked/squashed due to being routed incorrectly under the rear mounting bracket.

The lower lobes of the tank were nearly touching the crash bars.
 
Had this on my first beemer. Came back from the shop and so a sent in left hand side of tank, thought some scrote had been having a go, but the alarm hadn't been activated. I later filled up with fuel, and as it was during summer, the tank heated up again with the sun and the dent popped back out.

Unfortonately I didn't do anything about it until it was too late; after several cycles of this 'dent then pop out' regime, it finally sucked in enough to put a crease in the tank.

It turned out my breather was blocked at the right-angle bend in the metal pipe that comes through the pump/filter plate. Had to get a bit of stainless wire, unravel the strands and stick it in a power drill to slowly work through the corrosion. Cured the blockage, but nothing to do for the crease.

Get it sorted ASAP!

I had this problem with my 1150 and fixed it when I had the tank off to change the fuel filter.

The plastic breather that lives in the top of the tank attached to the filler cap and was stuck shut

Took off the breather hoses from the fuel filter plate and tied a bit of string to them so as not to lose them in the tank, took off filler cap housing and waggled the plastic breather out, there is a sticky out bit centre of the base of the breather that needs to be free, you can feel it rattling around when it is.

You will need 8-10mm SS hose clamps to replace the original ones you've pulled off.
