I've just received an exchange 2820 from Garmin and am able to update the maps to 2011 for free, I've been on the Garmin site and downloaded the updated maps (2 Hours) but no when I switch on the 2820 I get the following message "no detailed maps available to search" I've spent an hour searching the net and this site but can't seem to find any answer's :nenau
Any help much appreciated.:thumb

It can't be this (but I've thought it now, so may as well mention it - "you never know" and all that) - is it possible you've downloaded the maps to your PC and in all the waiting, not transferred them to the 2820 ?

As I said, highly unlikely, but I've done stupider (a word?) things ... :blast :blast

also, have you updated the latest version of mapsource? (maybe the new maps are newer than the version of mapsource :nenau I doubt it works like that, but again you never know.

As an aside, how did u qualify for an exchange and updated maps ?

good luck - frustration city !

The download from Garmin went through the following stages , (1) Downloading map detail (2) preparing Maps to install ((3) Transferring maps to unit (At this point the unit also displayed "receiving data"
The unit was a repair exchange (£160)

The maps are; nüMaps Onetime™ City Navigator® Europe NT 2011
2011.10

When I tried to do a straight full European install to my StreetPilot 2720 for 2011 mapping it failed as there wasn't enough memory. Not sure how much the 2820 has on board, I know it has an MP3 player, so it might need a clear out before you update the mapping to maximise the available space. Alternatively, you may need to install a sub set of the mapping as I did, this is an option as part of the install.

The only problem with the sub sets there are limited options that didn't tick my required boxes. In the end I did a shoe-horn install creating my own map-set from the unlocked download within Mapsource. With the mass storage mode of the 2820 this should be an easier proposition.
