I'm trying to help a friend who's having problems with what she has described as a Trojan. She normally runs AVG but I suspect she wasn't running the most up to date version:augie

Whatever it is, it seems to be slowly locking down her computer. It wouldn't let her download malware software - or any other kind of solution for that matter, and now she can't even get a connection to google. Her email works though.

My bright idea for the day (I'm one of those amateur techy's where a little knowledge is a dangerous thing!) was could she partition her hard drive and create a clean area to which she could download/upload something to try and get rid of it.

All help gratefully received - but solutions in laymans terms please!

Andy, have a read of this if you haven't already. It may help??

download the latest hiren boot cd's for her and burn it to a cd then boot her machine from the cd and use one of the AV programs on it. http://www.hirensbootcd.net/download.html. There are other ways to do it but if this works its the simplest. The other ways involve someone knowing their way around an operating system and being able to identify the process and stopping it then installing an AV to clean it up or doing it manually. another option depending on the operating system is to boot into safe mode and doing a system restore to before she got the virus.

what i did was download 'malware bytes' from www.downloads.com on another computer and put on a disk or usb drive then boot up the knackered pc in safe mode, install the malwarebytes program and run a full scan it should remove enough to allow you to then restart the pc and run malwarebytes again and remove the last bits. also dependent on your virus/problem you may need to stop certain processes in the task manager.

hope that helps - if you are still struggling drop me an email :)
