Hi Guys my mates dash display has disappeared, it lights up but without a display?? This has gone with no warning, OK when bike last run night before started in the morning lit up but blank display, bit like my pals face I guess!!!

Would appreciate any advice or info on this from you, bike is a 02 with ABS.
Feed and earth are OK at rear of dash!! Many thanks GS Ron.

Have you checked the fuses, I seem to remember the display is on the same fuse as the power socket:thumb

Help gs 1150 No Display

Hi Stumpy, sorry about the late reply, and thanks for your prompt response.
All fuses are OK, tried mine again 02 gs1150 and my display is on the same fuse as the fuel pump. I took the fuse out and the light and the display went out together, my pal just has the light on, which to me points to the lcd unit in the dash or somthing that controls it maybe??

Thanks once more gsRon. :thumb2

Bumping this one up because I have exactly the same problem on a GS1150.

VDO display lights up but no reading on either engine temp, fuel, gear position or clock.

With all dead, I assume its not a sender problem. Had dash apart and checked wiring around headstock etc No obvious probs.

No BMW dealer for miles from here and reluctant to spend £200 plus for a replacement display unless it is going to fix the problem.

Any suggestions?

Check the RID unit plug.

Under the tank at the front with all the other plugs, so no need to remove the tank, just pull it back to allow access to all the gubbins.

The RID plug is in the middle of the three rows at the bottom. Clean the contacts. There is also a small drain plug on the back of the RID unit which blocks, causing the PCB to sit in water/dampness.

Any other instrument problems look at this THREAD

Tried cleaning connector block out with no joy.

The drain is clear on the back of the display itself and it doesn't appear damp.

Is there any way of testing the display itself or any other checks to make?

Anything likely to improve if I stick the display in the airing cupboard for a bit?

Can the clock time adjusters get stuck?

At this point i'll try anything as the thing looks like its toast anyway so nothing to loose. All ideas gratefully received

No dash diplay

Hi Nige, when my pals diplay disapeared we went though all the tests as you have, with out success. Talked to local BMW agents who kindly said that if he dropped the diplay unit in to them they would plug it on to a another gs when they had one stripped, result three days later rang him to say his unit was dead!

Also said failure was extremely rare, the above would indicate no tests available for said unit....... unless you are an electronics bod, with the know how and equipment.

Sorry I know this isn't the news you were hopeing for, but I hope it helps. :beerjug:

Good luck gsron

GS Ron,
Living in the wilds of Cornwall there are no tame dealers in the area so the substitution option is probably out.
Non the less the input is great because it means I won't waste any more time on it.
Maybe time to try some breakers and wip round in the pub.

:tears

Thanks again

This drain plug for the RID, how obvious is it?

I'm asking as today I noticed a hint of condensation inside the RID plastic cover. Bike was parked with the sun pointing at this, by the time I got home, it had all gone. Just thought it might be an idea to have a poke about in this drain hole.

Little conical thing at the back, low down, I pushed a paper clip in. Condensation seems to have gone, wether that was due to my action or not, I don't know.
