Tafroute - Hotel Tafroute (watch the sunrise from the terrace)

Tinerhir - Hotel Tomboktu ( a beutifully restored riad)

Erfoud - best get out to the dunes at somewhere like Auberge Erg Chebbi

Tinerhir: I've twice looked at the Hotel Tombuctu (N31 30.913 W5 32.029) and twice moved on to another hotel. I thought it a bit expensive for what's on offer. I've stayed in Hotel Bougafer (N31 30.199 W5 32.476) which is a (OK, boring modern) hotel the same price as Tombuctu. A better alternative a few miles north is Chez Adi (N31 37.297 W5 33.677) which is in the Todra Gorge about 4 km past the high walled, narrow section. Email [email protected]

Nekob: I don't remember anything that looked worthwhile. We continued west to Adgz and stopped in a 'chambre d'hotes' by the side of the road called Auberge Berbere D'Ouriz. Inexpensive and one of the most memorable places we stayed.

Erfoud: if you don't fancy the Desert Inn (N31 17.390 W4 05.532), there's lots of places in Erfoud. We stayed in the Palm Club (N31 24.584 W4 14.941), an upmarket setup on the outskirts.

Tafroute: Bit of a confusing place and it didn't help that it was a holiday. I can't remember the name but we stayed in a big hotel on the top of a hill overlooking the city. Unremarkable.

I hope you went into and had a look around the place, I've been there twice and found it a great place to stay, good food too. It was restored by an Italian architect   Yes maybe it was a couple of quid more expensive than others, but handy for safely dumping your gear and riding the piste 'M5' (which starts at the end of that road) and 'M4' with a lighter bike.

Just remembering the hotel in Tafroute I mentioned, it was a bit tacky but views from roof were superb. (straight down onto a fuel station forecourt I think). :D

We had a 1st class breakfast on the roof. Nice people, relaxed town a couple of miles away.

I think it was the Hotel les Amandiers, Simon negotiated a good deal for us here. I also vote Tarafoute for the best Tajine of the whole trip but I can’t remember the name of the restaurant, but Tim might recall as he chose it.

It is always worth trying to barter the price of your room down, easier if it is out of season. I think we managed to do a deal almost every time thanks to Simon's fluent French. I even managed to renegotiate a better deal the morning we left one hotel.

Yes, and I'm aware the guy got a lot of thanks for restoring the riyad. Perhaps it was because it was off season and empty, but none of us were impressed.

Steve: I'm guessing your first 'quote' where we had breakfast on the roof should have been for Auberge Berbere D'Ouriz.

We looked at two restaurants in Tafraoute, one of which was the Star of the South (L´Etoile du Sud). I think that was the one we chose.

Tim

Steve: You remember well, in Tafraout it was indeed 'Les Amandiers'.

The other reason we left the Tombuctou was
-dreary decor (IMHO)
- the caretaker said the Hot Water was switched off (there were no guests!)

It was also cold and damp, Hotel Bougafer was cheaper after Simon cut a deal and totally secure parking for the bikes.
Tinerhir was the only place we had hassle while waking around the town, mild hassle but never less a PITA. I would not go out of my way to stay there again; it was also the town where we filled up with bad petrol.

Tim is correct, Auberge Berbere D'Ouriz (N30 40.848 W6 25.668) We could have parked the bikes inside but could not be bothered.

We stayed two nights at Kasbah Mohayut, just before Merzouga.

GPS _ N31 07'53.2
_W004 00'57.2

Good spot not far from the dunes & they organised a guide to take us into the sand.

Here's a couple of photos of it.
