Help I have an FD oil leak.

2 weeks ago, I did an oil change on my FD on my 2006 R1200GSA. I followed the instructions and pictures that JimVonBaden posted

I replaced the oil with 220ml of the correct oil from Opie Oils

Today I was giving the bike a good wash and noticed that there was oil leaking from the off side black plastic ring thing on the centre of the wheel hub. So much so that it was coating the offside of the tyre.

Any way, I cleaned it all off and took the bike for a quick blast 15/20 miles and when I got back I checked it again and it is definitely leaking. So how easy is it to replace the seal, is it something I could do myself and why would it be leaking now? After the oil change and not before.

Its an easy repair.

I didn't drill the old seal just used a pick to pull it out, you just need to be carefull of the shaft.

Refitting i just used the old seal as a drift and tapped it in with a nylon hammer.

As to why,

1. Coincidence
2. Too much oil - new amount for refilling is 180ml i believe.
2. Could be a sign of bigger Final drive trouble - check the amount of sideways movement at the top and bottom of the wheel, should be a max of 1mm.

Where did you get the great pics and info. Workshop manual I suspect. Any clues where I can get a hold of one? I'm in Samoa, in the South Pacific and obviously no dealers here.

Thanks

Shaft seal

My 2006 has developed a slight leak with this seal. Looks like an easy fix, but then should I drain and replace the rest of the final drive oil? Should I change the seal with out the back wheel on, to prevent any oil dripping on it? Like I said, only slight leak, so will still have oil in it.
Thanks for the timely post.

Cheers,

Ken

I did mine today,:thumb2 the oil seal was £9.00 and change from Sunderland, did it on the side stand, getting the old seal out, I drilled a very small hole (carefully) in the old seal, screwed a self taper in, and pulled it out with a pair of pliers.

I cleaned up the inside of the housing and then as luck would have it,:aidan I used an oil filter socket thing.(not BuMW:D) which fitted exactly on the new seal and lightly tapped it in.:augie

Less than 15 minuets to do, but because mine had leaked for a while:augie, I did the whole :blast refill thing again. I am getting quite good at it now:clap. Been for a run today, about 100 miles, no leaks and running nice.

I used a Stanley knife to expose the steel backing to the seal then levered them out with a screwdriver. The first replacement lasted about 40 miles. The second replacement (sent foc by SSB because new seals aren't meant to leak) lasted 200 miles. 1300 miles of leaking later SSB explained to BMW why they should provide a new FD assembly. This cured the leak!. My problem was a wear groove on the axle where it rubs on the seal, along with unpleasant graunching noises. My new FD has a drain plug where it should be, which I take to be an admission by BMW that "filled for life" is a very short life.

Yeah, after I replaced mine it started leaking again. I tapped the seal in a further 0.1mm :D and it hasn't leaked since (couple of thousand miles).
It's difficult to use the old seal as a drift to seat it the full distance.

Hi guys, I'll be doing an FD oil change shortly on my 2004 GS.

Is the new refill amount definitely 180ml now?

Thanks.

Ross.

yes, 180ml is the new amount. As far as I can tell from various dealers, 220ml can in some cases create too much pressure and can force oil through the seal. However, the new amount of 180ml only reduces the risk, it does not guarantee prevention of it from happening again.

ps, if you put some moly in with the FD oil, it further reduces the risk of leakage. They will mix when the oil heats and the moly further seals the seal (so to speak!).

Why would you want to put another additive into an oil developed at great expense by Castrol to do specific job?

Just replaced mine.
It really is straightforward.
Only nervous bit was drilling the wee hole...

There was enough oil left in that it was almost running out with the bike on the sidestand, so I'll give it a few miles with the new seal before I change the oil - I've had enough excitement for one day...

:D
