Yesterday the oil temp & petrol gauge stopped working, the gear pos & clock are fine, so i've just taken the tank off to see if anything had come loose. No, nothing on the bikes loose. But then noticed that the yellow & the white wires coming out of the four pin connector that plugs into the bikes harness, (the one that goes to the sender in the tank) had burned exposing the wires  nothing was trapped, no fuses blown and i've made the wires good but still no joy. Cant see how this has happend. Any help or experience anyone has had of this would be :thumb :clap :beerjug: :bounce1 :D (but i've got a feeling its gona be £££££££££££s)

Come on guy's, someone must know something??? called BMW and they want £800 for a wiring diagram!!!

I don't know, I'm sorry. :nenau
But I think it is a good idèa to test the petrol level sensor - I guess there are a petrol level sensor inside the tank?
If you have a friend with exact the same bike as you, perhaps you can borrow that tank and see if everything is OK? But I give no guarantee that your bike do not destroy a part in your friends tank - we don't know why it is broken, if it is broken.
-Why did that yellow&white wire burn in the first place, and the fuses are OK? I don't know. It seems odd to me.

-Can you measure if there are any signal coming through the four pin connector? (To figure out if your repair is good.) I guess there should be a signal when you are low on petrol, but I don't know.

Hmmm...
If there is a wiring diagram on the internet I guess that would help.
Search this site, if there is one on the 'net I guess it is here somewhere too.

I like mysterious things, so I'll keep an eye on this thread!
Cheers!

Whats your email address, I can send you a wiring diagram for the 2000 model, might give you an idea :thumb

Ditto

The same thing happened to my brothers bike about 10 days ago. Ignition on, faint wisp of smoke and burning smell

Ignition off, check fuses, all OK

Ignition back on, more smoke and petrol pump running continually

Look under the beak / cowl area and that area of the loom is melted

The bike is currently at Allan Jeffries, they still have'nt got to the bottom of it. It sounds like this is a common (ish) fault though.

Any one else had a similar experience?

I've posted and said this many times before -

Get rid of all the cable ties securing the wiring around the frame headstock. There are to many, and to tight.

Causes the wiring to flex at the same small point, which causes the wiring to break.

I get bikes in with these problems all the time.

If you keep bending multi-strand wire at the same point, eventually some of the strands will break. After a while the current is being carried by very few strands, which tend to overheat if any appreciable current is flowing. The overheating will melt the insulation until the wire can short against the frame or other damaged wires.

Could this be the problem here?

Will inspect that area of wiring on next tank removal day.

Thanx folks, its nice to know your not the only one with problems. Will keep you posted.
