My Merc, a 1889 190 2lts petrol (gas) has developped a problem. Start firs touch when cold, but when reaching working temperature, it wont restart or more accurate, id reluctant, unless the engine is cranked for long minutes. Seems that is starving of fuel, any suggestions, please. Local mechanics (London, UK) including Official Merc mechanics, can't find or even diagnose the fault.

Or does anyone know a competent mechanic in the South east?

help, please....!!!

surely its the fuel pressure regulator or the check valve in the system. ?

this could mean the heat is causing the pressure to fall.

try a Lucas or Bosch diagnostics centre.

Check the fuel pump relay...... My 1986 230 estate had a similar problem & eventually just stopped & wouldn't restart.

They had a problem with one of the relay posts overheating & you ended up with a cracked solder joint. Really easy to unplug the relay & take the cover off to reveal the PCB. You'll spot any cracked joint easily enough but run a soldering iron over the connections & remelt the solder. If that's the problem, it's really easy to cure & saves the £100 or so cost of a new relay.

HTH,

Thanks, all. WI'll check during the weekend.
Paul, any idea where the relay may be? Haven't got any literature on the car..

Cheers., Yosi

HTH,

If you feel that the problem is from fuel, you can remove the fuel pump relay in the fuse box an link out the pins so the pump runs continusly, try this and see if it starts any better.

The fuel pump gets a signal from the ECU to start pumping only AFTER the engine has started, it relies on residual pressure in the system being kept with a resovoir near the fuel pump. There is also a 'check valve' at the pump to stop this pressure being lost when the cars stationary, but this normaly leads to bad starting when cold.

I used to have one of these and did have a manual, which if i can find it would be happy to donate to you if you cover the postage

Spoke to my mate today ,he's a Merc technician couldn't remember what year your car was , he said ' if its an injection model the seals in the fuel distributor go and floods the engine when warm '
