:D not really... but I do need some advice on this...

I'm trying to remove the Drive gear on the Counter balance shaft of a R1200GSA. Unfortunately all I've got as a heat source is a kitchen blow-torch thing, great for soldering, but not good enough for this.

What do I need? just a basic blow torch, or is this an opportunity to buy the baby Oxy-Acetylene torch I saw in Homebase once? :D

hummm it was a serious question guys...

I need to go out and buy something for the job... will a blow torch work or do I need to be looking for something with a bit more kick?

Has anyone got any experience removing these gears?

A blow torch might be a tad aggresive for this. You want to warm it up not change the granular structure of the metal. I would suggest a hot air gun. you can then use it for heatshrink on all the wiring jobs and stripping paint.... Hope this is of some help.

The more heat the better, as long as you are carefull!

You want the gear to be removed heated very quickly in order to allow it to expand and pull off the shaft, a slow heat will cause everything to expand and you will be no better off.

Doh! I've never used one, so I just wasn't sure how good hot air guns are... and yes I did notice the pic, I guess I just assumed it meant heat, not specifically hot air gun ;)

I finally got around to buying a hot air gun last week, £15 from B&Q, to heat a rear wheel bearing on an 1150.

I'm glad I did as I also tried to remove the front disc retaining bolts which were loctited on my DR650, without using it to soften the loctite i would have chewed the Allen bolt heads. Get one:thumb

For the amount of use it gets, a Black&Decker hot-air gun is good enough.

I've had the same one for nearly 25 years, bought as a refurbished jobbie from B&D.

It only has two heat settings but with the cone attachment (as in the photo) you can control the heat and keep it localised pretty easily.

Wait until you need to remove exhaust clamps before you buy an acetylene set (but even the a butane blow torch will do most of the time).:)

:D I know it will probably do, but that never the point with new toys is it ;) and the set just looked so cool :D I just know I would be soooooo dangerous with one

Gonzo, no I'm not a dealer, lets just say this short block isnt under warranty and wasn't picked up from a beach.

Though assuming it's all functioning I'm half thinking about considering building it up to a full engine if I can source the rest of the bits cheaply...
