Hi all
I was out on my 2007 1200GSA when it just cut out,i turned off ignition switched it back on again let it do its check pressed the starter button and nothing the bike wont turn over and no fault showing on display. Had bike recovered back home i replaced the ring antenna and still the same. Have anyone here suffered the same problem and what was the fault. I've checked the side stand switch ,clutch switch and starter button and kill switch and they are all Ok. And the battery is showing 12.46volts anyone got any ideas.

Many Thanks
Tony

Battery voltage seems a bit low

my modern Bonneville was very sensitve to battery Voltage when it came to starting

ps probably talking boll*cks so please feel welcome to ignore me

Try a different battery or the fuel pump controller, they are the most common show-stoppers

The battery voltage is OK-ish, but that doesn't mean the battery isn't knackered so it's worth doing a swap just in case though I'd be surprised if it made the bike cut out like you describe. Is there any noise whatsoever when you press the starter button, like for eg the solenoid clicking? A side stand/kill switch failure would do it but you've checked that.

Check the earth connection on the bike from the battery is OK as well as the connections at the battery terminals.

A dead FPC wont stop the engine spinning over, just prevent it from firing as there's no fuel delivery

Thanks for your help so far.Hi Teapig nothing happens when button is pressed no click. I will check the battery leads to see what i can find .I put the bike on charge and the battery is now showing 13.18v. Done a continuity test on starter button and thats ok.

It does sound just like a starter lock-out. Does the gear position indicator work OK as if the bike doesn't think it's in neutral it won't start. Pull the clutch in to test this. Again though, this shouldn't make it cut out when you are riding, unless it thinks the side stand is down

I take it you've not had chance to have it plugged in for a diagnostic check? If there was an electrical fault that triggered a shut-down of one of systems you'd have no way of knowing these days since there are no fuses. I reckon you are close to having to bite the bullet and pay for a read-out unless there's anyone near you reading this with the GS-911 gizmo that will help you out for a couple of beers?

Hi Teapig
I managed to borrow a GS-911 found code 10444 Fuse activated for component block 3(starter relay,IMMO(EWS)ring aerial, ignition coils, injectors).
What i have done so far is replaced the ring antenna, replaced starter relay, checked the start switch, clutch switch, gear position, side stand switch and the kill switch .I have also removed the fuel tank to check the connectors onto the controllers and they all seem ok.:tears

It would kinda of helped if you'd mentioned all that stuff in your first post eh?

Well it's saying you've got a current overload somewhere in that lot, so something's either gone short circuit to earth or close to it. Certainly explains your breakdown.

In theory, all you need to do, rather than swapping components is take each one on the list out of the circuit in turn until the fault clears (ie the engine spins on the starter - bit difficult I know without a solenoid, so do that last and substitue a bulb or something similar for the solenoid so you can see it's getting power)

If you still have problem it's suggesting the loom may be the culprit so look for chaffing where wires pass over the frame/engine etc

Does he need to consider the starting circuit at all? It cut out whilst riding and so the starter equipment wasn't in use.

Ok fault has been found it was one of the coils, I thought if one of these played up the engine would run ruff not cause the engine to cut out.
Thanks again for everyones help:thumb2. Now i'm ordering my own GS-911 tonight.:clap
