HELP. PING Queery

Can anybody help? PLEASE.
I play a game on line with my oppo, and yours, Sgt Bilko, called Sudden Strike Forever, (sad I know but there you go someone has to play it)

Anyway, When I enter the game everyone keeps moaning my ping is too high and I get banned from all games.
I know that high pings cause the game to lagg (or so I'm told).(wtf is a ping) duh fick or what.

I know nothing about the technical side of computers and was told to come here for advice 'cause this is where all the good eggs live.

Is there anyone who can tell me how I can lower it please. I am banging my head against the wall now

I do hope there is light at the end of the tunnel and that someone will be able to help. My isp have been no help at all so now it's up to you guys. thanks for listening.

Stan..'ping', also known as latency, is the speed with which you connect to the game server....the lowere your 'ping, the faster the info goes from your machine to the server and hence the faster you will be able to see and react to the game and people in it....for years LPB's (low ping bastards) have had a big advantage over HPB's (high ping bastards) in online games, and it sounds like you have a good connection...broadband maybe??

In gereral, the lower your ping, the better (quite obviously) your gaming should be, but in your case the game you're playing seems to have a ping cap so that LPB's like you dont have an 'unfair' advantage over the rest of the gamers playing.

I'm pretty sure there must be some commands to manually limit your connection, but as I've always been doing things to lower my ping by tweaking DUN settings etc, I have no idea how you would go about it....but DUN settings would be a good place to start.......try looking for DUN programmes on the web, or 'broadband optimisers' etc, then do the reverse of what they suggest to lower your ping.

Either that or play a better game.......come and join me in Star Wars Galaxies ...the lower your ping there , the better...and what a glorious looking game!!

Ping is a tcp/ip based program used to measure the latency of communications between two systems - or in simpler words the time it takes for a communication to go backwards and forwards between your computer and the computer you are talking to.

Ping latency is measure in milliseconds. A good ping latency is around 50ms - pretty much what you would get by pinging a system at your ISP such as their DNS server. Pinging a remote server (eg www.sun.com) may increase the ping time to 200ms (i.e. 0.2 seconds). Higher than that and communications will really be impacted.

Try for yourself - ping some of these machines with the following command in a MS-DOS command window:

ping ns0.pipex.net (name server for UK ISP pipex)
ping ns0.uk2.net (name server for UK web hoster)
ping www.ukgser.com (this site)
ping www.dvdcrave.com.au (Australian ecommerce site)

Notice the very different ping times for each address - especially the long ping time to Australia

The very best way to reduce ping time is to go for a quality ISP with an always-on high bandwidth connection. Bandwidth is the measure of the amount of data that you can shove down the pipe between you and the ISP every second. A modem at 56K can theoretically move about 5000 bytes every second. A 512K broadband connection can move up to 10 times that.

A typical dial-up ISP will cost you between £10 and £17 per month. For just a few pounds more you could upgrade to an always on broadband connection (cable modem or ADSL) if this is available in your area.
