Hi

My son is about to get a f650gs Dakar.

He has a full licence but needs to restrict it down to 25kw (33bhp) because he is under 21 and with less than 2 years exp.

Fitting a kit dont look too hard, but what happens when the kit is fitted?

Do we take it to a MOT testing station??

Has it got to be fitted by a Garage?? or can we do it??

How does anyone know a restrictor is fitted (apart from my son, me, you and anyone else who reads this or you tell!!, Just thought i would add that!!!!!)

thanks

mark

Ps if anyone is selling one please let me know

I don't think anyone has to be visited to 'endorse' the fitting of a restrictor kit. Just make sure it's still in place if the bike ever gets pulled over (or worse) and looked at by a policeman and your boy is riding it. Insurance assessors certainly know where to look. Being done for riding without a valid licence (unrestricted bike that needs an A licence) and no insurance (you insured a restricted bike, not an unrestricted one) is a crappy way to start a motorcycling career. And it probably means losing the A2 licence, redoing a CBT, and retaking another test.

Mark, you probably know this already, but for those that don't...

If you've got an A2 licence and you're under 21 it doesn't automatically convert to a full A licence on your 21st birthday. You still have to either wait the two years or take and pass another test under the Accelerated Access Scheme. (If you fail you still get to keep the A2 you've already got).

Equally, if you took a test aged 17 and got your A2 licence, you only have to wait two years before you get an automatic full A licence upgrade (R1 at 19, anyone?). You don't need to wait until you're 21.

The OE kit should be available from BMW dealers - but I bet that there are loads around second hand.

PS If you get an OE kit, you'll need a tamper-proof Torx set.

Bought kit from my local BMW dealer, borrowed security torx, fitted it, kept purchase receipt, took pictures of it fitted, sent pictures and receipt for part to wife's insurance company (it was her 650).

When she crashe bike, pointed it out to the copper who attended, no problems with the insurance company at all.

I just collected my brother in laws 650 GS today for him. The main dealer had fitted the restrictor. There is still enough poke in it to hit 60 if you want  . It lacks power in 5th gear thats all. Great bike I was surprised at the fun potential on it.

Whilst as a bike instructor I wholeheartedly endorse everything N leader says....the average copper hasn't actually got a clue about the regulations surrounding the different types of bike licence. I even had one in my office asking me what bike they could ride on "L" Plates :rob
