Sounds like just the sensor then.........
Have you tried just cleaning the exterior terminals and area to make sure it's not just shorting?

I've done MANY miles with an oil pressure light on after fording, or even just in seriously heavy rain, after the sensor shorted........once it had dried up, it started behaving again, but in my case it was always preceded by a logical cause like that.

If the level is dropping from the sight glass when you start up, it sounds like the pump is working :nenau

Yes, was riding in monsoon like conditions down the MD when it started playing up.

They can go at no particular time of their own choosing

All you need to know is your connection a single uncovered female spade terminal or a plastic clip in thing thats the two types

Have you tried taking the connector off the sensor and drying it out.

I've had mine come on after a power wash, and drying out the connector cured it

You might find you don't needed a new sensor, just dry out the connector.

I will give that a go straight after breakfast and report back.
Btw it was the M4 not md I was riding down in monsoon conditions, and also found that my " 100% waterproof" rain suit is anything but!
I was soaked through to my underwear :-(

preassure sensor

Fester, I changed my pressure switch cos it was leaking last year and this happened to me with the new one! I spoke to a BMW mechanic who told me with high mileage bikes they can do that. Just put some 20/50 in and it'll be fine...guess what, it was. :clap

Update:

Took female spade connector off and cleaned it and the sensor, also pinched the spare for a tighter fit.
Started bike, no oil light, took bike for a test ride, all good up until I got back to hotel when as I pulled up and revs went to 1k the light came on :-(
I let it idle for a few mins and blipped throttle and light goes out, but after a minute or so it wouldn't go out until over 2k rpm, then it started to flicker even as I increased to 3k, so it would appear that it is the oil pressure sensor, but are these affected by the temperature of the oil, or could the temperature be a factor in its breakdown?

Update

Right, firstly thanks for the replies, and particularly to Smudger for the offer of use of his OPS while I was in his neck of the woods :thumb2

I ordered a new switch from Motorworks (who were very helpful) and it arrived the day after they dispatched it.

Fitted said switch and after much test riding over the last couple of days, I can say that all seems well :thumb2

oil switch

disconnect the wire from the switch if it still flashes about it's only a wiring fault
