I've noticed over the last few weeks that the clutch is starting to slip on my 1998 GS1100 (40K on the clock). As I am a maintenance dunce I have to ask the question, is it possible to tighten the clutch? If not, is a recon' clutch my cheapest option?

For those who know nothing:

The short answer is NO!

Given the time needed to replace the clutch, the only sensible route is to replace the entire thing with a new one - probably from Motorworks.
Be prepared, though to find oil on the clutch when you get someone to strip the bike, and, if there is, then the gearbox also has to be stripped to every last component to replace the oil seal at the far pushrod end.
Guess how I know?

Wasn't that helpful - and cheery!

Thanks Myke, two further questions, how much did you have to fork out and do you know of a good cheap workshop in the East Sussex region to get this work done?

Yes, and loosen it.

On 1100 models you must have play on the clutch arm at the rear of the gearbox. No play can cause clutch slip.

The adjuster is at the rear of the gearbox. 13mm locknut, 10mm adjuster.

Don't worry about being to technical over adjustment measurements, just make sure you adjust it so you have some play in the clutch arm at the rear of the gearbox.

Thanks Steptoe, I'll try that.

I do everything myself & live in Norn Iron, so am no use to you regarding where to go. Ask the collective!
