Recently joined the site - by by own admission rubbish at technical/IT stuff. Want to post photo to site - have Apple Mac G4 running IPhoto software / System 10.3. My problem is how to reduce the image file size sufficiently to enable direct posting to UKGSER forum. I've looked a the IRANVIEW download site, but it seems its only appropriate for PC's! Do I have to post it somewhere else such as Smugmug or what? Any advice / pointers would be very much appreciated.
Thanks

Hi Mystic

Do you have a .Mac account? You can use your account to host the photo, and put a link in your post. iPhoto has a publish to Web or something similar that lets you downscale the image at the same time. If you don't have a .Mac acocunt, consider signing up for it!! It's a very useful tool, especially if you're using other peoples PCs frequently, because you have access to all your contacts, shared files, email etc etc

Otherwise, use Export from iPhoto, specify the dimensions, and export the photo to your desktop or somewhere, then host on something like smugmug.

Try exporting the picture from iPhoto onto the desktop, there are options for choosing the size of the picture when you choose export from the file menu. Then when attaching the picture it's easy to find, on the desktop, and can be discarded afterwards whilst keeping the original unsullied and safe in iPhoto.

Thanks all for your responses, and so quick too! - guess part of my problem is that the picture files I want to upload are all pretty large in their original state - 1500K+. By scaling down in iPhoto to 640x480 - would that correspondingly reduce the file size? What is the maximum file size which can be directly uploaded onto the UKGSER forum site when posting? I'll keep trying...........

Hey Mike,

I'm a Mac user too.

I'm sure there are other better ways, but this is what I do.

If you want to host a photo which needs reducing in size first,do this:

Open iPhoto, click to highlight the photo you want to use,and then go to the top menu and select "Share" and then "Email".

This will open a window like this :

You can select reduce the file size by selecting Medium or Large.

When the new, reduced photo appears in a new window just drag it straight out of iPhoto onto your desktop. You can then close the email window containing the photo without saving it.

Then just use something like Image Shack to host the photo.

Select the photo file [from your desktop] and 'host it'.

When this window pops up,highlight the line which I have and copy it,then just paste it in the appropriate forum thread :

Done.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Manny - I'll try it later this evening - I'm blowed if this thing is going to get the better of me, even if I'm 5 yrs retired!

I use a Mac and just take em straight on to Photobucket no problem and post from there. No resizing needed.

Select your picture in iPhoto. Click file and in the dropdown menu you'll find export. Click that and a window with export photo will appear. There are 2 options here one is full scale images and the other is scale images no larger than. Click this and scale it to the size you require, I use 640X480. Click the export button. another window will open, you have an option to name the new file and then save it to your documents, or whereever. I usually save to desktop. I hope I have'nt overcomplicated this.

Thanks all of you 4 your time & help - just like having a dedicated personal IT support line - Ta
