I am trying to find out from anyone who has cut teh lip off the standard screen if it reduces the wind noise. I am tempted to cut the lip off mine and see if its any quieter, before shelling out for an MRA Vario. I have tried the Tobinators which have reduced buffeting but not the wind noise, which I find a problem as I already suffer with tinitus.

I use a Schubert S1 and expesive custom earplugs, but still suffer with ringing in the ears even after short rides.

It is the one thing that for me really spoils the bike, and if I cant sort will probably see a parting of the ways. my other bikes, VFR & Hornet dont suffer any where near the same.

any advice or constructive comments appreciated.

Get a MRA Vario............you won't regret it........

Don't know why other people don't............it's the only screen with height and tilt adjustment.............so at least you've a fighting chance of improving the windflow over the GS.............why waste money on other screens without adjustment.

To cure GS buffeting there are only a few choices ............IMHO
MRA
Tobinators (with any screen)

unless you fit a barn door like an Aeroflow...........

Strange that this question should be posed today, as I've spent the whole day playing with screens. I too have become obsessed with screen noise spoiling the ride.

So, last night I cut the lip off a well-used (marked) standard screen and rode it out first thing this morning. Made a few adjustments to the Tobinators during the ride. Result, slightly improved suppression of wind noise (Tobinators+original screen had stopped the buffeting).
Back home, removed screen and fitted MRA Vario with Tobinators. Out for another ride and numerous stops for adjustment of Tobby's and/or MRA. Result, well so so.
Back home, remove Tobinators and refit MRA. Out again, stops......... Result, not much difference between MRA on its own and chopped screen with Tobinators, but for me I think MRA just about wins it.
MRA on its own "wobbles" around a bit though when compared to standard screen and Tobinators.

Having noted the positioning of both screen setups I might just repeat the 2 final setups again sometime. Yes, I might just be mad.

Regards

Tim

Cheers for the replies. Bryn you didnt say if you tried it without the extension, if you did was there much difference?
I think I'll get the dremmel out this weekend just to see. My screens not in the best nick so I wont be spoiling much.

If I'm not happy with the results then my wallet will be £116 lighter for the MRA.

Here's a wierd thing.

Riding through Austria the other week, I noticed that the wind noise wasn't as bad as usual.

When I stopped, I noticed that the screen was set at different heights on each side, ergo, it was at an angle on the bike.

I wonder if this may mean that the airflow of the screen was sort of 'spiralled' thus flowing cleaner over my helmet.

However, it could just have been the torrential rain that had an effect on wind flow ...

I haven't bothered changing it back ( the screen that is, not the rain :D

Tobinators & Cee-Baileys

There's no doubt that Tobinators dial out the buffetting but like everybody here, wind noise was becoming as big an issue with me, I bought Cee-Baileys biggest, which is +7+4, and can honestly say I don't have a problem now, to the point where I've forgotten to put in my ear plugs and not noticed it.

 Everyone knows they have quieter air in Austria!!!

(My screen's not totally level either.......and I found a setting straight away that works for me....I wonder if you're on to something?)

Baz, i cant honestly remember the result without the lip, on its own without the tobinators, but having stuck on the extension, i removed the tobinators, and just fitted the screen with the extension piece (crudely imitating MRA) buffeting was back again. The tobinators therefore, must be improving matters. Bryn

Hi Bryn

Yep, been a problem since I got the GS last July.

I reckon the major factor is simply the diameter (unequal size) of the 2 headlights + metal light cover thingy and resultant shaped lower edge of screen leading to poor airflow characteristics.
Man on a mission now, so I might just try cutting the lower screen edge to a constant curve when I've got nothing better to do. Still have "shaped metal light cover thingy" though.

I'm 6'0" BTW.

At 6' I have the same wind noise problem on mt 1100 with its rectangular headlight. Ive been given a Touratech spolier (cheers Ferg) which Ive yet to try. Which according to most cures the problem, but IMO looks terrible.

Stef, It does not look that bad, function rather than beauty. I have no qualms with wind noise on my bike and I'm 6,1 too, also using a crap concept helmet without ear plugs.

I've got one Stef, and although it made a difference to the buffeting, it hasn't stopped the wind noise. I'm 5'8" and have the seat on it's lowest setting on my 1100. Plus the damn thing moves about, won't stay central and is beginning to mark the top of my screen.

I may well bite the bullet soon and go for an MRA one, which seems to be the screen of choice for these?

Cee Baileys cured it for me also, Adv conversion +7 high +4 wide.

Funilly enough my little MZ doesn't have a screen but there is no buffeting, so I reckon its the screen that causes it.

Wind noise

I've got a Givi, an MRA and, of course, the standard screen.

All of them, with or w/out Tobinators, set at any angle, are noisy.
I reckon the noise is coming from airflow around the sides of the screens, about level with the headlights, which then flows over the 'bars, hits your arms and then flows upwards hitting the underneath and sides of your lid. Therefore I believe it's the (lack of) width of the screens at about headlight height causing the problem. The Adventure screens are wider right about there ; has anyone fitted one of these screens to a standard GS (with the smaller tank) and noticed an improvement ?

Maybe a beakectomy might help ?

Quietest of all is no screen.

Phil
