I've never had a problem loading / ripping cd's onto my computer before. I normally just pop it into the drive and it does it's thing. Now when I put a cd in it starts ripping the first song, gets to about 20%, it then turns to "error" and spits the cd out! :blast

HELP! :bow

Hard drive nowhere near full, just been re-jigged by a puter shop. CD is a brand new straight out of the packet jobbie. Only choice left is a knackered drive then. :(

i dare say there are other possibilities. i just can't think of any just now.

IF it is the CD unit, they are really cheap. last time i bought a dvd writer, it was about £15 for a Pioneer.

You could try shutting down some of the other programmes running in the background. i.e. disconnect Internet, close running programmes, virus checkers, malware detectors, etc. to ensure that these are not hogging resources. If your CD ripping then is successful, that will give you a clue where to look. Otherwise looks like a defective CD Writer or maybe a dirty laser lens/detector, etc.

What software are you using to rip the CD - Windows Media Player, iTunes or something else? There was a post on here a while back saying that iTunes did exactly what you are experiencing after it was upgraded. I just tried mine v 10.1.2.17 and it worked ok. It might be worthwhile trying another program if you have one installed.

Nothing running in the background, I can play music off the computer ok, using Windows media player, no i tunes etc.... not doing very well am I! :blast

Have you tried slowing down the write speed of the CD Writer? Some CD Readers don't like CD/DVDs that have been written at high speed (24*). Try a slower speed of say 10*.

I have just been having a load of problems trying to recover data after my PC Master Boot Record became corrupted. Trying to boot with a Linux Knoppix CD but a lot of my old CDs don't seem to work in the CD Reader :blast.

I know it is obvious but I'll ask anyway.. Is it a protected C.D. or have you tried other c.d.'s ?

No, not protected cd's. Won't work with any other discs either. Best I get off down the puter shop. :(

Another thing it could be is that if you have purchased a new batch of discs it may be that they are not compatable with your drive.discs can use differing dyes which have trouble with certain cd/dvd drives. Even if you have bought the same brand as before the companies often swap between manufacturing factories.

Drives are easy to swap... Just take the side panel off ,remove four phillips screws(2 each side) from side of drive ,unplug date cable and power cable. swap in new drive plug in ,fit screws and put side panel on
