I am thinking of buying Hepco-Becker Gobi panniers and top box for my Adv instead of the BMW alloy alternative at £1138. The HB set comes in at a little over £600.

Anyone got any experience of these, are they a good product and will they do the job?

Cheers:beerjug:

Not had any experience but you should talk with the UK distributor. I was looking at the "Exclusive" HBH panniers a while ago and they gave good advice so I stayed with the BMW panniers as I alrady had them. Would probably have changed if I was bothered and could have got a reasonable price for the BMW Ali Panniers. I really wanted a reasonable sized topbox but now make do with one of the panniers as a topbox. PM me if need as I am still looking for a suitable replacement for the BMW Ali Panniers..

Dont forget you have to add the mounting racks so a full gobi set would be:

L&R Panniers: £510 plus VAT of £89.24 =£599.25
Top Box (not Avail until Sept?) £155 plus VAT of £27.12 = £182.12
Pannier Frames: £110 plus VAT of £19.25 = £129.25
Top Box Rack: £65 plus VAT of £11.37 = £76.37

Which all comes to £986.99 plus delivery.. which is not far off the BMW price..

Mind you the mounting system could be changed SW-MOTECH from Germany do a quick dismount mounting system for a larger number of pannier makers. It looks good and seems quite cheap. Their URL for the 1150 mounting is Mounting The UK distributor isMotohaus

Thanks for the advice, Motobins have a 10% off sale at the moment and not counting shipping they work out at £613. everything including brackets.

I was really interested in the BMW alloy set, but even with my discount with the supplier they were still coming in at a grand, not fitted. Plus I was only being offered £300 for the system cases (including topbox) by the dealer, so I was going to take too big a hit. I like the HB set but I have never seen any fitted to any BM yet over here.

i think whatton has a set of H & B panniers fitted, in fact he's posted a pic in another thread. dunno if they are the same ones you're after:

The Gobi's come with the KTM 950 at least in the USA

and many people prefer diferent brands.
personally I got mine for $200 brand new in the box,I do not know if this is the case in europe but i think is a good idea to take a look.

if I was paying retail i don't think I will ever buy them, they are nice and very strong but the internal space is limited and for sure they look like a Beer coller.

if you want REAL panniers take a look at this

Well spotted Cookie. H&B "Exclusive" Range.

Not that exclusive as Steptoe has a set as well.

:) ;)

Hi Chaps,

well I've just got a message to say that my Gobi's have arrived at the dealers, so I'll let you know tomorrow as to what they're like and how they fit!

Hi Reggie,

I take it you are getting your Gobi's from Motobins as well. Mine have to make it across the pond, so it will be Wed or Thurs before I get mine.

Let me know how you get on with fitting the carriers. I'm told the instructions are in German and mine is very poor to say the least. So any tips on how to make the job easier and quicker would be appreciated.

Hi Elvin,

no I ordered mine thru' my local BMW dealer (Williams Manchester).

As I haven't got a clue with German I just ignored the instructions, just used the basic diagram and it went together very easily!

I started opening the wrapping at 6:45pm and finished the job at 8:05pm, so that's not bad and most of the time involved finding my tools!

I had H&B's on my F650GS and these new Gobi's went on much quicker.

E-mail me if you want photo's etc.

Good luck

Regards

Hi Reggie,

Got mine this morning. I tried to feed the text of the instructions into 'Bable Fish' for translation. Flippin' heck....I understood more of the original German than the supposed translation.

I did the same as you, just laid everything out, took a while to ponder which length of bolts for which anchor point. Seems to have worked well, though I did have two washers left over.

The panniers are really tight into the tang on the locks, but I thought better tight than loose. There were two black plastic cone shaped gromets and some totally undecipherable instructions with the top box and I can't figure out where they fit, or indeed if they are needed. Any advice?:P

Hi Elvin,

I didn't get the top box as I'd already got BMW's own.

The only rubber items that came with the panniers are small circular sections that stop the lids from rattling!

I had 3 washers and a single bolt left over, so they must be unable to count!

I like mine, what do you reckon to yours?

Hi Reggie,

So far, I think they are great. Plently of space. I had the black standard BM system cases and top box on the Adv, looked good on the black Adv, but on trips away proved impractical as they were side opening. Especially when the bike was on the side stand, if I opened the left pannier things fell out unto the road. We are off to Morocco in two weeks, so I thought I needed more capacity, but the BM Adv alloy boxes are £1,138, even with discount far too expensive. I want to take the bike out on the road now and test it with all the weight in just to see if there are any handling differences. I will take a photo or two and attach them later when I get home.

They will take a bit of getting used to, they are a lot higher than the system cases.

Cheers mate.

Elvin. To upload your pictures to this site you need to be a sponsor.. otherwise, the only way you can do it it host them on another (your) site and link to them.
