Erm, I don't know...............................

My speedo has stopped working. No speed is being indicated and the odo is not recording miles travelled.

The cable is good.

The little plastic wheel in the drive unit on the front axle is good as is the worm drive in the unit.

A long shot I know, but is it possible that the drive mechanism within the clock is fecked? I can't remember ever having read of such a thing here but you never know.

The bike has over 116,000 miles recorded so far if that makes any difference in terms of the wellbeing of the speedo internals.

Any thoughts gentlemen?

If you disconnect the cable at the wheel can you drive it with a drill to spin it up, that's how we used to test speedo cables and heads on cars before it all went digital.

Not sure it's all that much of a long shot, speedos do fail. Mine was replaced at 42,000.

Thanks Jon.

I changed the wheels yesterday evening and when I went out today the speedo was working as normal. After 120 miles though it stopped working again. I plan to give the drive unit a good cleaning and see how it goes.

In the meanwhile, has anyone got a spare speedo clock that I can try please? I am happy to cover the postage cost.

You are on the right track, Give the wheel mechanism a good clean and inspection its easy to see if it is all working ok.
Once the wheel mech is checked, the drill idea is good to check the speedo is ok.
If you have to buy a replacement speedo you can use a drill to wind it forward to the Honourable 125k

Same problem here
was ok and then the next day the needle was flicking up and down about 10km and it decayed rapidly until about 30km later it was not indicating.
However the odo does gradually increase, about 1km for every 50km ridden - maybe.
Will get to have alook at it some time.....
Use my GPS instead

Not doubting your diagnosis Aidan but how did you check the cable? I've had a couple that have snapped about 1" up from the bottom end and on a visual inspection they appear intact but when you pull the inner cable out of the sheath all becomes apparent.

Hi Aidan,
I had this happen once after wheel had been out - everything at first seemed to be in good order but after deeper check I found that the metal drive dogs down at the wheel drive had been bent back slightly so not engaging properly - just had to bend them back in a bit with a screwdriver or similar:thumb - have a good look at it and it will make sense.
Think Hay Ewe has had the same problem.

Cheers..........Grizzly:beerjug:

Removed the cable altogether, held an end in each hand and gave it a good old twist hops. Seemed alright.

Thank you. :thumb2

I'll be sure to check that Grizzly.

Kind regards to you and your lovely better half whos' name escapes me just now. It has been a while. Glen Clova 2009 if memory serves.

Hi Aidan if you need to try another 1150gs clock you can borrow mine. Drop me a pm.

Hi Aidan,
Yep, it has been a while - Joyce is the name that's escaped:rob

I happened to have my front wheel out yesterday to change the tyre - so I was able to refresh my memory:rob of the exact set up with the drive dogs I'd described above.
There is a steel ring with two bent tabs (like a tab washer?) held captive by the oil seal - between the wheel bearing and seal - this ring just sits loosely in position and when the speedo drive is entered into the hub the bent tabs should engage with the nylon drive lugs.
If the two sets of lugs are not aligned correctly to engage then the steel ring tabs get bent back out/back and you end up with no speedo drive.

Hi Aidan
mine was the cable on holiday last year, simple replacement and done

Thank you very much indeed Marcus. It will be Sunday before I can get a look at it as I'll be busy at Tandragee on Friday and Saturday.

Ah yes, so it is. Kindest regards from Mandy and I to you both. As above, it will be Sunday before I get to it but I will keep an eye out for that. :thumb2

Thanks man. I know now that my cable is good so it's down to the drive or the clock I think.

No problem Aidan I'll be out of commission re-bike riding for the next few weeks. So if you need the clock there's no issue. Cheers Marcus:)

So this morning I finally got round to checking out the speedo again. I know that the cable was good so tried driving it with the drill, nothing. Then I noticed that the odo was going backwards to I reversed the direction of the drill and bingo, I got her up to an indicated 70mph.

I then dropped the front wheel out and started by cleaning the drive unit.

The teeth on the bottom of the plastic drive were good

But on closer inspection the little castles that take the drive from the wheel are fecked.

So I need a replacement drive unit. By any chance do any of you chaps have a spare lying about that you would sell?
