Hi Viz Survey

Done don't bother with hi viz surely the lights on should be enough. I think you should always assume that your invisible to other road users anyway. :nenau

Done. I'm probably against the trend in that I always wear high-viz so makes no difference to me. Each to their own.

I agree in that my all weather jacket is one of those fluo yellow Hein Gericke things anyway. But the point is, "let the rider decide". Shouldn't be mandatory and, although it may help the paramedics find a body, more hi-viz wont do anything for driver awareness in preventing accidents.

done

i dont were one but i have reflector strips all over bike which are cut into areas of bike that you would not notice until you shine light on the bike.
always drive with lights on.

HiViz

Done.

Advised to be worn at night.

When weather conditions are poor, ie reduced visibility.

My feeling is that we are moving away from the real issue here: COMPULSARY

The issue is not really about how effective Hi-Viz clothing is, or is not.

My own view on the compulsory element is if it happens it happens.

On the effectiveness of Hi-Viz clothing, yes I believe that it is effective.

Do motorcycle instructors wear a Hi-Viz jacket and do their students wear one. If yes why

Why do the emergency service motorcycle riders wear Hi-Viz Clothing?

Why does anyone wear Hi-Viz clothing??

I recall a MAG demo late in 2008 (which was cancelled) but MAG were organising Hi-Viz bibs for those attending, why.

I agree, let the rider make the decision but if it enforced there's feck all we can do about it

Just completed it.
Nerer wore high viz and never will. There might be rare times when its safer, like above, when you come off at night. But it's also safer to take the car, it's safer to not tour on bikes, it's safer to not go out on journeys unless it's absolutely necessary etc etc. Let the rider decide.

+1

Done.
I wear hi-vis most of the time, but I am firmly in the "let the rider decide" group. The problem is not that we are not seen, it is that having seen us many drivers will still pull out in front of us. They dont pull out in front of many large trucks regardless of their colour.
Emergency services wear hi-viz because of the health and safety taliban!!
In my near 30 years professional experience, an idiot on the road will be an idiot no matter what you are wearing, how many blue strobes are flashing and what the circumstance is.

I have been a rider for over 33 years and my experience in that time tells me it is beneficial in terms of BOTH visibility to other road users and in terms of what KIND of rider I am percieved to be. Attitude is a massive part of the overall picture and another road users perception of you - generally formed immediately they see you - will affect how they react to your presence.

Want an example - you see a police rider in your mirors. How do you behave ?

Why do government / public sector employees have to wear 'safety' Hi Viz clothing ? Its because millions of pounds have been spent with CREDIBLE researchers to ascertain if its beneficial or not.

The result speaks for itself.

Survey completed.
HTH.

MAG Ireland needs your help!

We've just launched a survey to assess the situation regarding the voluntary use of high visibility clothing by Irish riders. It's just 12 multiple choice questions and should take no more than five minutes of your time. By taking part, you will help to shape MAG policy and our discussions with the RSA on this issue. For a full explanation, and to take part in the survey, see the MAG web site post at:

http://www.magireland.org/2011/campaigns/hiviz/mag-ireland-high-visibility-survey/

This survey is to show the RSA riders attitudes towards the wearing of Hi-Viz. MAG believes that we wear them in appropiate circumstances. We know the RSA will be conducting their survey soon but that is done by students standing at fixed points. This survey is to show the RSA that we as riders do take care and that the problem is with drivers not with us.

Please tell as many riders as you know about this survey and ask them to fill it in.

Many Thanks
~~~
Linda
(That's Mrs Og - so be nice now. :D )
..........
This is being posted on many forums, you lot can be a bit quiet on 'this sort of thing' :augie so dont be letting me down now! :rob
:D
Consider it done.
Always amazes me the number of people who register that you are there but dont actually SEE you. Generally bikes get seen as being further away than they actually are, so some people pull out anyway thinking, that they are further than the bike actually is.. the bigger the bike, the less chance there is of someone misjudging your distance from them, and the better the chances of them actually thinking that they had better not pull out as you're far too close. Just my 2penneth worth feel free to have your own opinion please.....
I would have to disagree with you there Firefox. People do pull out right in front of trucks without thought of what it takes to stop 44 tons of truck moving at 50mph. Driving a truck is not that much different to riding a bike as you seem to spend your day watching for the dickhead that's going to do something stupid.
This video is on Mag Ireland's site. The wearing or not of hi-viz doesn't seem to make much difference.
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/1ODGEN-vG-g" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
I have never worn hi-viz and hope that the choice is never taken away from me. With that in mind I have completed the survey.
That's a fact. :rolleyes:
And the crux of the matter.
The tendency is for car drivers to look for.... cars. :rolleyes:
Fair enough that 80% of the road going 'fleet' is cars - so 80% of the time none harm done.
BUT,
it is Failure To Look -for movement, for ALL road users - for the other 20% that causes crashes.
Buses and trucks get SMIDSY's too! :eek:
Hence the argument that no amount of day glo etc treats anything but the symptom and does not deal with the cause.
On mature reflection (whose quote is that) Aidan, you're right. they do pull out in front of trucks, even when they are red, covered in hi-viz with flashing blue lights and sirens blaring. And in front of ambulances too white or hi-viz yellow, makes no difference.
The point is, in general, it's not that drivers don't see you. They take a chance anyway. Look at that case in Clare recently. the driver admitted in court that she had seen a single headlight approaching, that visibility was poor in fog, and said she "took a chance". And the courts don't help, she walked.
A friend drives a fire engine in the west end of London and says it is unbelieveable. Pedestrians as well as drivers take feck all notice of the engine with all the noise and lights going. :eek
That very case was in my mind as I read down through this thread and I can't help but think that nothing, least of all hi-viz would have changed what happened. Apart from the driver exercising a small bit of patience of course.
