Had been having problems with my 3 week from purchase 52 plate 1150 GS starting that was eventually solved by the fitting of a new starter motor last week............. but

Since i have got it back it now idles at 2000 revs when up to temprature. Should i be looking at adjusting the idle back with the brass screws or have the hamfisted muppets at the Honda dealers (bought the bike from them so need to use their warranty) put it back together wrong causing the high idle.

I have checked all the fittings i can see to look for an air leak that might confuse the motronic but cant find anything obvious as yet.

PS....... i am a complete mechanical incompetant new to boxer twins after a stable diet of inline jap 4's so please speak in slow, clear, easy to understand terms and expect many more similarly stupid questions in the near future as every wobble, rattle and drip will be raised for reassurance ........ ithangyew :thumb2

first , try turnin the brass screws back (evenly)

I know that will reduce the idle speed but was just wondering if doing that will be hiding/masking the actual cause............... if you see what i mean

i would think if theres a prob, itd not go down or the idle will be uneven, if its still quite even, they prob set your idle when the bike wasnt warmed up

Try squirting water in a mist around the injector bodies etc, if the revs drop it's an air leak.

NOT in the air intake! :blast

are the rubber bungs from the vacuum take offs (underside of throttle bodies) missing or split?

Before touching anything make sure the throttle pulleys are resting on their stops.

As thegarage that done the job might not be used to working BMW's check that the L/H cable isn't caught, the starter cover is behind the pulley and i have seen them caught previously.

Mine (03) started doing this and it turned out to be the choke stuck in the second position (has 3 settings). I thought it was going fully off:blast. It was taken off, cleaned up and not done it since.:thumb

Thanks people............. i now have a list of things to look at when i get home from work tomorrow evening. :thumb2

Right.

1) Checked the throttle pulleys, all ok and on the stops giving a full range of movement. Out of curiosity took out No 5 fuse for the 10 seconds and tried a TPS reset.

2) Rubber bungs all checked and in good nick

3) Sprayed a mist all over the throttle bodies and surrounding area with no change to the idle speed

4) Wound the screws out 1/4 turn and the idle speed went up to over 2000  so wound them in half a turn and it dropped to 1400 but wouldnt go any lower and i let the engine get up to normal operating temp.

Time to take it to a friendly local GS owner and mechanic i have been suggested to go visit

don't do this first.

ffs.

It will be out of tune and he will be like me three years ago. Thre are other reasons for high idle like a sticky 'choke' cable etc. Where's the angry smiles? :Whatton:fnikefork Sometimes it's easier to just pay someone who knows to fix it.

:comfort Thanks dude:thumb2

My head get;s really sore when I see posts about adjusting the bike if you don't know what your doing:D:aidan:blast

Thought i would update this following a visit to a local bloke with lots of BM knowledge who found the problem and why turning out the screws didnt lower the idle as it should. I was right in that it was only masking the actual problme which was...........

The Honda mechanic who fitted the starter motor had set the idle speed on the bike when it was cold by just adjusting the throttle cables with a spanner which is why as soon as the bike warmed up it shot to 2000 revs :blast

All now sorted and adjusted back to correct idle speed and balanced as well with a nice Souriau Indiana 2440 Digital Inlet Analyser :thumb2

Lovely and smooth .................. now to sort the 5000-5500 rev misfire under load which is probably a failing coil pack
