Am off on a late solo jaunt round the region in the first week of October :clap

Day 1: Home to Dusseldorf, then AutoZug overnight to Villach.
Day 2: Villach to Ljubljana via Kranjska Gora & possibly Lake Bled
Day 3: Ljubljana to somewhere in Dolomites
Day 4: Dolomites to Switzerlandish via various passes
Day 5, 6 & 7: Switzerlandish to Blighty via B500 in Black Forest and as many nice bits as possible

As you can see after the Dolomites the route is rather fluid so to help get a better idea of which way home are there any passes/Touristy bits/routes or accommodations that are a DEFINITE hit or miss?

Please be generous in your suggestions......I'll to have to go back again if I miss something out :green gri

A few of our local roads

Day 2--- go into Slovenia via the Loibl pass rather than the Würzen a better pass to ride and you can reach Kranjska Gora on Day 3 anyway. You have all day as the train arrives early in the morning at Villach.

Day 3--- to Kranjska Gora, turn left over the Vrsic pass (206) down the other side, take the road north (203) towards the Passo di Predil into Italy. Just before the border crossing into Italy look out for the Mangart road on the right. Don't miss it especially if the weather is clear.
Once in Italy turn left after the Laggo di Predil towards Stella Nevea to join the SS13 to continue towards the Dolomites.

All of this is my home territory-within easy reach in a days ride-tough living here you know!

If you want any advice about this area-places to stop sights to see just let me know.

John,

Much appreciated - I'll follow your advice and plan these routes in to the journey.

BTW what's the weather like at the end of Sept? I'm expecting 15 deg C by day with chiller and probably wetter up top of mountains.

Thanks

Tom

If that's what you are expecting you might be pleasantly surprised, it's not unusual to have temps into the low or even mid 20's at that time of year. Often the weather is stable with clear skies for days on end. It can turn cold but then again, here in the mountains, it can do that in high summer. We have seen some of the high roads closed for at least a day in June, July and August.

My usual advice is to take layers rather than a thick jacket, good waterproofs are essential just in case. that way you can cope with anything

Blast home in two days from Switzerland and spend an extra day in Austria or the Dolomites would be my recommendation - even if it means skipping the B500 - this can be done on a long weekend another time - the Dolomites and Austria are a bloody long way away (And far better than the B500)

Happy days! - Will be packing layers - dressing like an onion is standard policy for an indecisive like me. More flexibility!

Thanks Rasher (sounds like something you would read in the Beano that!) Have been poring over the maps and I reckon you are right on this one....
