hi,i am looking at a honda dominator with thoughts of improving front and rear suspension with a view to using it as an allround trailie with decent dual carriageway/motorway capability, any thoughts or experience please.

I had a Dominator, bought it for a trip to morocco in 2005, think it was a '97 or '98 model. I did 20,000 miles on it with NO problems...a truly great bike. My only regret was not upgrading the suspension as it's far too soft. If you do buy one it will be worth spending money on the suspension, have fun

I had a 99 model for 4 years, brilliant bike but soggy suspension, very road biased. Motor always superb with 3k engine oil changes. Handles far better than you would suspect. I'd have another tomorrow.

:likeit....funny clip!

I have just bought a Dominator. 16k on the clock and will collect on Monday, does anyone have any thoughts on immediate checks, service routines please??....

Thanks.

A friend of mine did one up about 10 years ago, initially he used an XR600 front end and remote reservoir XR600 shock and after a couple of years changed them again for a later XR650R front end and a refurbished CR500 remote reservoir shock

The battery is the most likely thing to be a bit tired. Fortunately, it's a doddle to kick start - which reminds me that the Dominator was the last bike I ever owned with a kick start fitted.

..really enjoying the Dommi as it gives a good grin factor, pound for pound it's brilliant value and v economical.. The only issues so far...even with a new battery, the bike is not not starting very easily and I don't want to burn out the starter. Also when thoroughly warm, the engine revs too high at tick over.
Suggestions please ......

Loads of info on the XRV.org forum, they have a sub-forum for Dommie's.

I'm having the same tick over problem and it seems to be attached to the clogging of 4 small holes in the carb. They sit in the carb body just the other side of the butterfly from the exit of the fuel air mixture screw.

I did a full carb rebuild and it has clogged up again less than 2000 miles later.

Also have you reset the valve following the instructions?

I could get my valve set correctly, so gave up and :rtfm

I then found out that you need to rotate it anti-clockwise to get TDC or it engages an auto decompression do dar.

Never owned one but read somewhere that they ate cush drives in short order. Easy to check I guess.
