Will be picking up my 1200 in a few weeks time and it will be used everyday for commuting all weathers. As a resullt I have been looking at extenders and rear huggers with a view to how they keep off the salt etc for rear shock and the front of the engine. Just how effectvive are these options, in particular the front extenders? (I have seen a few responses on the huggers).

Cheers in advance

Steve

good luck with the new bike steve and be sure to seek advice on running it in from those like fanum..... seems the manual is not the best way.

sadly salt is salt..... it gets everywhere..... save your money for a wax sprey and a heated vest.

 Cracking choice there, you'll love it.

For a front extender try www.viewmybike.com/mudflap

I've fitted one and they do the business. As for the hugger I fitted the Illmberger item which is well finished but doesn't extend far enough to cover the linkage. Motorrad Concepts' item does extend further down and seems to be the best item at present.

Both items are well worth the cost, especially if you're going to be using the bike on a regular basis.

Used mine for the past year and a bit much as you plan to use yours and it's been fine without any of the options you mention, or in fact any additions other than LED indicators.

Salt gets everywhere regardless - the only solution is a hose down with cold water every day and a thorough wash every month or so during winter.

Just ride and enjoy... lots of useful stuff on here covering most of what you need to know about the bike (including tips on winter use) etc.. just take some time to wade through it all... you won't regret it. :)

Made a front mud flap from an old mouse mat & some sealer to hold it on so no drilling been on 6000 mile so far :D

Nippy Norman front fenda extenda and MC hugger at the back for me.
Both reduce rather than eliminate spray from wheels.
At the front filth still hits the cross-pipe but nowhere near as much as without it.
Same story at the rear, you still get mucky but hugger keeps direct blast of swing-arm and shock link and general amount of muck is reduced.

Got my bike in November and before fitting bits spent more time cleaning salt off than riding.

Enjoy!

Don't bother with any of it - they look far better covered in crap anyway

Hope it doesn't squeak like my front brakes use too... ;)

I found that water was running down between the join of my NN extender and then onto the front of the engine / cross pipe so I removed it ran a thin bead of silicone sealant across it an re-assembled.

Works much better now :)

stuck a front "fender extender" on to the bike - bit of an improvement but not a lot. Too much air and crud billows round the sides. In any case there's nothing to beat the smell of cowshit on a hot exhaust. :thumb

On the back I cut 2 pieces of stiffish plastic to shape (food industry conveyor belting in my case but there are other things like mudflaps) and fastened them one at each side to the inside of the rear frame with cable ties. Looks neat but more to the point has been brilliantly effective at avoiding the shit thrown forwards onto your leg by the rear wheel.

Huggers are so "sportsbike". It will be fake carbon fibre next! And matching leathers.

Crash Bars

What Crash Bars are you going with, I know I have a vested interest here, however it is more done to the fact that I have so many bad reports re: the BMW ones
