hi, advice and piss taking on my 09 1200gs. starts no problem when cold without the battery being on a charger but when hot will crank over on to compression then starter stalls for a second then fires the bike up. quite often think that is not going to start at all.
so opinions welcome, starter or battery? tia, jags.

My twin cam used to do exactly the same thing but it never failed to start. I had it investigated by local, friendly BMW Motorrad dealership and they found nothing untoward.

My 11 plate GSA twin cam right from new always sounded like it needed a bigger battery, but never actually let me down..!

I had the same on my '08 for years, never failed though. In the end I put an Odyssey in and its much improved.

Try jump leads first. A voltmeter is also handy to judge just what is going on.

My 2011 TC has been the same since I bought it. Mentioned it at the last service and the dealer found no problem. It's never actually failed to start, just does the same as yours.

My 2010 GS did the same, but always started. I think as the engine gets hot the compression rises a little and hence the hesitation when hot starting. The starter is under more load. But i could be speaking utter bollocks :augie....................just my ramblings. The GS Gods will be along soon too tell me im a twat and give you the correct answer. :D

I have been having exactly the same problem, had the starter replaced but still happens a bit. Decided to replace the battery as it was 5 years old with a Motobatt MBTX12U, haven't tested it out yet but am hoping it will improve the problem due to it's higher CCA.

My 2010 does it all the time when I start it from hot. I think I read on this forum that it has something to do with something in the starter expanding when hot and increasing friction. As others have said it makes the bike sound like it is struggling to turn over but always fires up straight away so I can't get too excited about it.

Now back to more serious issues like that poor bloke with the scratch on his pannier:aidan

The starter motor and associated wiring has increased resistance due to temperature increase.
This is the most likely cause.
It's known as heat soak.

Yeh mine does that. 2011. Bit heart stopping but always fire just after it seems to stop if you get what I mean. I just thought it was a characteristic of the 1200. My 1150 never did it.

My '08 did it and I wasn't that worried, until the day it sat struggling in the middle of the road at Brockenhurst railway level crossing as the traffic drove around me.

Problem cured with a Motobatt battery.

Did your battery fit OK ? I had to give mine a bit of "persuasion" before it sat in the slot nicely, I think it must be a slightly different shape where the live and neutral looms go around it.

It dropped straight into place nicely, no fitting issues at all.

Mine never did it when hot but was reluctant when cold.
I wanted a ballistic but the high cost put me off. I fitted an Odyssey AGM which fits best with terminals to the front. It means rearranging the big battery leads but result is solid
