Hotmail requesting a verification code?

I'm trying to sort out a question from my old man about a request from Microsoft that he get a verification/security code when trying to log into his Hotmail account. He needs anothe remail addy to have the code sent to.

I've tried to log in to his account on my phone and get the same.

Before I explain to hime what to do does anybody know if this is kosher, have you had to do the same?

I ended up being forced into this at one stage. I ended up creating a fresh Hotmail to use as the alternative email address as I didn't want them to have my gmail address.

Some online "banks" have started something similar - one of those phoned up the landline number I provided and read out a series of digits which I then had to enter into the webpage.

edit: Like any security type access - he should ensure he goes to the https version of the page (https://www.outlook.com) by typing it in and not from an email link etc
